Philippine PEN will launch Ferdinand Blumentritt and the Philippines: Insights and Lessons for Contemporary Philippine Studies by Feorillo P. A. Demeterio III on 27 July 2013, Saturday, 5:00 pm at Solidaridad Bookshop, Padre Faura St., Ermita, Manila.
This publication, by De La Salle University Publishing House and the Austrian Embassy Manila, commemorates the centenary of the death of Blumentritt (1853-1913), known hitherto for his friendship and correspondence with National Hero José Rizal.
The book reveals and explores another facet of Blumentritt, that of an exceptional scholar of Philippine history and culture, and a political critic especially of Spanish and US colonialisms. In the introduction, Demeterio asserts that the book “reconstructs the intellectual stature of Blumentritt by positioning him as a milestone in Philippine studies, a discourse which until now is still trying to soul search for its methodic and ideological niche in the sphere of local knowledge production.” It presents an intellectual biography of Blumentritt, his writings, and Demeterio’s astute insights and “lessons” for contemporary Philippines studies.
Demeterio is full professor of Filipino and director of the College of Liberal Arts Research and Advanced Studies at DLSU. He is the author of the book Ang Ideolohiyang Politikal ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines: Isang Pag-aaral sa mga Piling Pahayag mula sa Limang Panahon ng Kontemporaryong Eklesiastiko-Politikal na Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas (DLSU Publishing, 2012). His essays on hermeneutics, philosophy, Philippine history and cultural studies have appeared in various local and international journals.
The booklaunching is open to the public. The author will be present to talk about the book and to personalize your copy. For inquiry, please call Solidaridad Bookstore (632) 2541086.
