Independent life is good for you!

BLTX, small-press expo is on 2 March 2012, Friday, at Ilyong’s on Kalantiaw, Project 4, QC, 8PM onwards.

BLTX Talks in on 3 March 2012, Saturday, at Chef’s Bistro at 94 Sct Gandia cor. Tomas Morato, 2PM to 8PM.

Better Living Through Xeroxography or BLTX is a small-press expo now on its second incarnation, the first one a success by indie standards: 30 small press publishers and 200 buyers on a rainy December day in 2010.

The goal of BLTX is simple. Bring together independent self-publishers from Metro Manila (hopefully from elsewhere, too), in a one-night event that will allow them to sell their wares: books, yes, but also zines and other printed materials like shirts, postcards, posters, and this year, CDs from musicians more indie than indie. It’s about selling, but also about meeting like-minded individuals who believe in literature and creative work that might not ever get into the mainstream of commercial bookstores and galleries, but for one night is the star of the show.

You can also just imagine BLTX to be the coolest meet-and-greet between writers and readers, one that involves beer, some music, and plenty of creativity you rarely see.

This year though BLTX will also be space for productive discussions on the making | marketing | selling of the self-published book, where practical aspects of actual independent book production will be shared by those who have survived it with sanity intact. BLTX Talks will happen the day after the BLTX small-press expo, a full six hours of four different panels that will answer central questions about PRINT PUBLISHING, ONLINE / WEB PUBLISHING, RETAIL & DISTRIBUTION, and COMMUNITY. All necessarily in light of the industry of independent self-publishing, and all against the traditional forms of cultural production as we know it in these shores.

Confirmed speakers for the BLTX Talks are Mabi David (HighChair), Tweet Sering (Astigirl), Honey de Peralta (Flipreads), Oliver Ortega (hal.), Ime Morales (FWGP), Mike David (Kubori Kikiam), Feliz Perez (Mt. Cloud).

Participating small-press and indie publishers for BLTX include The Cabinet,
 Gelo Suarez,
 hal.
Heights,
 High Chair,
 Kubori Kikiam,
 Macoy,
Omeng Estanislao, Pantas, Paper Monster Press, Patrick Rawwrr, QBCCC (The Quarterly Bathroom Companion Comics Compendium), Rob Cham, Silent Sanctum Manga, Tapat Journal, Tilde Acuña, UP Writers Club, Zigzag Animals, UP Music Circle, Migi de Belen.

BLTX is the brainchild of the Youth & Beauty Brigade. Check out the BLTX FB Event Page for updated lists of participating small-press and indie publishers and BLTX Talks speakers! See you at BLTX and BLTX Talks!

The Protection of Geographical Indications

The Protection of Geographical Indications

Tuesday February 28, 2012
11:00 A.M.
4/F J.V. Del Rosario Function Room 1
Asian Institute of Management
Conference Center (in front of Greenbelt 1)
Paseo de Roxas, Makati City

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on goods that have a specific place of origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that place of origin. Geographical indications may be used for a wide variety of agricultural products, such as Champagne from the province of Champagne in northeast France; and Tequila from Tequila, Guadalajara in Mexico.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) aims to encourage branding of products on the basis of their geographical origin. It has initially identified eight products that may be protected as GI, namely Aklan piña cloth, Batangas Barako coffee, Bicol pili nuts, Cebu dried mangoes, Dagupan bangus (milkfish), Guimaras fresh mangoes, Lake Sebu Tinalak from South Cotabato and Lumban barong.

The national forum slated on February 28 and 29 will bring together LGU officials and representatives of community producers such as the Lipa Coffee Board, Bicol Pili Board, Aklan House of Piña, Aklan Piña Man-Tra, Lumban Embroidery Association Multipurpose Cooperative, Guimaras Mango Growers Cooperative, and Lake Sebu Women Weavers Association, Inc. Speakers from the World Intellectual Property Organization and the EU, and the IP Offices of Thailand and the US are set to attend the forum, will attend the forum.

The participants are expected to produce a roadmap for the protection of GI after the forum. The roadmap will assist the IPOPHL in identifying products eligible for protection under the GI system, developing GI associations or groups, establish control, accreditation or conformity assessment mechanisms and push for the passage of laws that will create a national GI protection system under the IP Code or under a sui generis law.

FILCOLS @ the Folktaglyphs 2012

FILCOLS' Beverly Siy, Executive Officer for Membership and Documentation attended the Folktaglyphs 2012 Philippine Visual Arts Fest held at the Angono Municipal Gymnasium last 17 February 2012. The theme was Tracing Resonant Cartographies through Contemporary Eyes. It was a visual feast where characters and creatures from Angono's mythologies and folklore were featured.

The event was graced by hundreds of visual artists and tattoo artists from all over the country. Most were contestants for the tattoo art competition held last Feb. 18. Local historian Ligaya Tiamson-Rubin and guest anthropologist Dyani Lao served as speakers.

Ramon "Chitoy" Zapata, the president of Neo Angono Arts Collective, gave the welcome remarks as the program started. He mentioned that NAAC has always been in the forefront when it comes to public art festivals. The venue of the event was very conducive for public viewing where everyone can come in and take a look at the art events, a municipal gym right in the heart of the town.

Zapata also signed the FILCOLS Memorandum of Agreement for automatic membership. According to the group's website, NEO-ANGONO's members are visual artists, writers and poets, musicians, theater people, filmmakers, cultural workers, and art critic and researchers. The members of the core group were Wire Rommel Tuazon, Keiye Miranda-Tuazon, Carlos “Totong” Francisco II, Aaron Bautista, Ian Lomongo, Rem Vocalan, Ramon “Chitoy” Zapata, Claire Zapata, Mideo Cruz, Raoul “Iggy” Rodriguez, and Richard Gappi.

Still according to their website, most members are residents of Angono while others come from Manila, Mindanao and as far as Japan and USA. The group welcomes non-Angono artists because their ideas – once applied and contextualized in Angono milieu – are potent ways of infusing Angono art scene with new life and blood.

The group’s advisers include artists Nemi Miranda Jr., Jose Tence Ruiz, Mideo Cruz, Iggy Rodriguez, respected art critic and UP professor Alice Guillermo and poet-musician Jesus Manuel “Jess” Santiago.

Folktaglyphs 2012 was organized by Neo Angono Arts Collective, Municipality of Angono ang the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

FILCOLS set up a booth at the Taboan Writers Festival 2012 held at the Fontana Convention Center, Clark, Pampanga last February 9. Authors and cultural workers from all over the country were present at the event. German Gervacio of Mindanao State University-Iligan and Hope Sabanpan Yu of University of San Carlos Cebu and Cebuano Studies Center signed up on the spot. Both are creative writers and have numerous published research works on Philippine culture and culture of their respective regions.

COPYRIGHT EDUCATION - LECTURE @ Antipolo

The COPYRIGHT EDUCATION - LECTURE with FILCOLS (Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society) held last Feb. 10, 2012 at the Sky Deck, Cloud 9 Resort & Hotel, Antipolo City became an intimate gathering of authors/creators.

The attendees sat comfortably in the Sky Deck that was good for about 20 people. Among them were artists, writers and two art gallery owners who are also painters.

Ms. Precious Leano of Filipino Visual Arts and Design Rights Organization (FILVADRO) gave a talk on copyright basics and the artists rights over their works. She also spilled details about membership to FILVADRO. All of the participants signed up after she discussed the benefits of a FILVADRO member. She also announced that FILVADRO is now in the stage of licensing and collecting after she proposed a project that will use copyrighted works (visual art) to Department of Trade and Industry.

Ms. Leano also said that all sales of art works should be fully documented for easy monitoring in case of transfer of ownership. She encouraged everyone to be more aware and to practice this kind of system.

After her talk followed Mr. Alvin Buenaventura of FILCOLS. He discussed the potential income of authors especially the artists from the collection of an RRO like FILCOLS. The participants also signed up for FILCOLS membership.

After the program, sharing of ideas took place. FILCOLS encouraged the participants to produce more works in collaboration with other creators for a bigger impact. Zaldy Arboso, the chairman of Siyudad ng Antipolo Arts Guild, invited FILCOLS again for another collaboration to reach a wider audience in Antipolo.

This event was co-organized with SINAG and Cloud 9 Hotel Resort. SINAG is the first group of authors from Antipolo who signed automatic membership of their members to FILCOLS.

IPOPHL JOINS Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH)

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) joined the expanding Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) network. Director General Ricardo Blancaflor signed the PPH agreement with JPO Commissioner Yoshiyuki last February 9, 2012 in Tokyo, Japan.
PPH is in general, work-sharing among IP offices. Work products from one IP office can be used as reference by another IP office for substantive examination. Hence, PPH is envisioned to benefit both examiners and applicants as it will increase efficiency of examination and result to faster turn-around time.

Implementation of the IPOPHL-JPO PPH will begin on March 12, 2012. The guidelines and other important matters relating to the program have been uploaded in the IPOPHL website.

The IPOPHL is the latest IP office to join the 24-country PPH organization which includes modern IP offices of more advanced countries such as the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), European Patent Office (EPO) and Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO). In ASEAN, only the Philippines and Singapore are members of the PPH. The PPH program is part of a global effort to initiate work-sharing and reduce redundancy of work in IP offices.
