Anti-Book Piracy Council launched to fight book pirates.
The newly-formed Anti-Book Piracy Coalition (ABPC) went into full swing in its anti-book piracy campaign all-over the country.
The coalition is composed of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Optical Media Board and the Philippine National Police, the National Book Development Board (NBDB), the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) and the Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society (FILCOLS), through the leadership of the Intellectual Property Office Philippines. The ABC was launched at the IPO office in Makati City as a move to control incidents of book piracy and illegal photocopying inside and outside school campuses in the country at the start of the school year 2010-2011.
FILCOLS, together with BDAP and NBDB are asking students and parents to use original books and textbooks, not book-alikes or photocopied versions. They are also asking higher education institutions to be licensed and provide students with wider access to knowledge through legitimate photocopies of copyrighted materials and at the same time collect fair royalties for distribution to authors and publishers.
FILCOLS, a local association of local authors, publishers and copyright owners, headed by National Artist Virgilio Almario, will invite owners of higher education institutions to get licensed and control the use of illegal photocopied materials to help readers and content creators of books and textbooks thereby helping the local book industry grow.
