The Davao Writers Guild, together with the National Commission or Culture and the Arts and the Humanities Division of Ateneo de Davao University, will hold the book launch of Dom Cimafranca's "An Unusual Treatment and other short stories" on February 17, 2012, from 4:00PM to 5:00PM, at the Alumni Hall of Ateneo de Davao University.

"An Unusual Treatment" is a collection of Cimafranca's short stories previously published in Philippines Graphic, Philippine Genre Stories, Philippine Speculative Fiction, and other magazines and anthologies. Edited by Dr. Ricardo M. de Ungria, the collection consists of genre stories of fantasy, horror, science fiction, and crime. This is Cimafranca's first book of fiction.

"An Unusual Treatment" was published under the Davao Writers Guild's Tubao Book Series, under a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The Tubao Book Series aims to promote Mindanao's unique literature by featuring writers from the region.

After a series of successful OpenBook talks featuring highly-acclaimed and bestselling authors Sam Sotto (Before Ever After), Bebang Siy (It’s a Mens World), Tweet Sering (Astigirl) and Ricky Lee (Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata), award-winning poet JOEL TOLEDO will be the featured book author at the Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines’ (FWGP’s) OpenBook talk at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Chef’s Bistro, located at 94 Scout Gandia near corner Tomas Morato, Quezon City.

Joel will read works from Ruins and Reconstructions -- his third collection of poems (published by Anvil Publishing) -- and his works in progress. This will be followed by an open forum, book signing and photo ops.

Joel is the author of three books of poetry, winner of two (2) Don Carlos Palanca Awards for Poetry, and is the first Asian to win the Bridport International Creative Writing Prize. He was a recipient of The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center residency in Belagio, Italy in March 2011, and the International Writing Program (IWP) residency at the University of Iowa, U.S.A. from August to November 2011.

A poetry-reading session will precede Joel’s talk. Among the guest readers are: columnists Jenny Ortuoste and Karen Kunawicz, Ramil Gulle, Abet Umil, Ceres Abanil, Nonilon Queano, Haresh Daswani, Veronica Laurel, Brandon Dollente, Rustum Casia and Rafael San Diego.

There will be performances too of GENTLE UNIVERSE, a nature- and children-inspired ambient sound performance group and BERSUS, which will play poems-turned-into songs pieces.

The event will be hosted by BEBANG SIY. Entrance fee is at P200, inclusive of one drink. Proceeds from this event will fund future projects of FWGP, including upcoming OpenBook sessions and ongoing efforts to help Sendong victims in Mindanao. Call for Submissions for the 11th Ateneo National Writers Workshop

The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP), with the support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and in cooperation with Humanities Division of Ateneo de Davao University and Heights: The Official Literary and Artistic Publication and Organization of the Ateneo de Manila University, is now accepting applicants for the 11th Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW) to be held from May 21 to 25, 2012 in Davao City.

Each applicant must submit a portfolio in triplicate (3 copies) of any of the following: a suite of five (5) poems OR a collection of three (3) short stories written in Filipino or English with a title page bearing the author's pseudonym and a table of contents. Entries must be addressed and submitted to the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) c/o Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, 3rd Flr. Dela Costa Bldg., Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City 1108.

The portfolio must be in Garamond, font size 12, with one (1") inch margins on all sides. The portfolio must also be accompanied by a CD containing a file of the portfolio saved in MSWord (.doc or .docx) or Rich Text format (.rtf). All submissions must include a sealed envelope containing the author's name, address, contact number, e-mail address and a one-page resume including a literary CV with a 1X1 ID picture. The resume must mention the applicant’s province of origin.

Twelve slots are open to beginning writers, from which a few slots will be allocated exclusively to writers from Mindanao and to Heights members. Trademarks payment and BPI

Payment Procedures Using the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI):

1. The BPI Payment Facility is available to all trademark applicants filing applications using the Trademarks Online Filing System (“TM Online”; https://trademarks.ipophil.gov.ph/tmonline). It is not available to applicants filing their trademark applications in the IPOPHL Headquarters in Taguig City, Philippines.
1.1 TM Online filers will need to choose “BPI Payment” in the drop down box for “Payment Type”.
1.2 Upon completion of the online application form, a Statement of Account (SOA) containing the BPI Reference Number will be generated. The SOA is valid for a period of seven (7) calendar days.
1.3 Bring the SOA to any BPI branch where payment can be made over-the-counter or using the BPI Express Assist (BEA) machine in the branch (Annex “A”).
1.4 The filing date of the application will be the date of payment in any BPI branch.
1.5 The IPOPHL will send an e-mail confirming receipt of the application and the application number to the applicant and/or agent/authorized representative within seven (7) calendar days from payment.
1.6 A minimal service fee will be collected by BPI for the use of the payment facility.

2. The BPI Payment Facility may be used by patent applicants filing their applications at the IPOPHL Taguig Headquarters but paying for their application within 30 days from filing.
2.1 The receiving officer will issue a SOA with the BPI reference number. The SOA will be valid for a period of thirty (30) calendar days.
2.2 Bring the SOA to any BPI branch where payment can be made over-the-counter or using the BPI Express Assist (BEA) machine in the branch.
2.3 If payment is made within thirty (30) days from filing, the filing date will be the date of receipt by the IPOPHL of the patent application.
2.4 A minimal service fee will be collected by BPI for the use of the payment facility.

UP Diliman Joins ITSO

Barely a month and a half before the formal Launching of the Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) or the Patent Libraries Network, the University of the Philippines -Diliman finally accepted the invitation of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to be one of the hosts institutions of the ITSO.

UP Diliman’s acceptance to be host institution was formalized through the Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the IPOPHL on 01 February 2012 by UP Diliman Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma and IPOPHL Director General Ricardo R. Blancaflor. The MOA Signing was witnessed by IPOPHL Deputy Director General Andrew Michael Ong and UP Diliman Research and Development Vice Chancellor Benito Pacheco.

Primarily, the ITSO is envisioned by both parties to provide the following services:

1. Support IP creation by facilitating access to global science and technology information:
a. Serve as a patent search facility and library for patent information;
b. Provide skills training in patent searching;
c. Render patent search services; and
d. Organize a community of patent information users.

2. Support IP protection by promoting domestic and globally-competitive
innovations:
a. Provide general information on patents and patenting;
b. Provide skills training in patent drafting and prosecution;
c. Render patent drafting and prosecution services; and
d. Organize a community of experts to participate in patent examination.

3. Support IP utilization by assisting commercialization of globally- competitive innovations:
a. Render IP audit and evaluation services;
b. Provide licensing support;
c. Provide advice on IP management and commercialization strategies; and
d. Be a depositary of patent-related documents, papers and statistics.

UP Diliman will join 30 other Host Institutions from Universities and non-academic Institutions during the official Launch on March 22, 2012 in time for the WIPO-IPOPHL’s “High Level Forum on Access to Technology for Innovation”. This is regarded as a momentous occasion as no less than the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General, Dr. Francis Gurry, will be the Guest of Honor.

WIPO is IPOPHL’s partner in the implementation of the ITSO project. The organization provides technical assistance and international linkages to similar initiatives worldwide.

Art 2 Art presents one of its most special episodes as National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera discusses the life and works of fellow writer and National Artist for Literature Lazaro Francisco on February 26, Sunday, 3:30 to 4 p.m., via DZRH.

“It is indeed a great opportunity for us to have Dr. Lumbera as a resource person to talk about the late Lazaro Francisco who Filipino novels, as serialized in Liwayway Magazine, tackled social issues that remain relevant today,” says host Lisa Macuja.

The episode on Francisco is part of Art 2 Art's tribute series on National Artists aired every last Sunday of the month.

FILCOLS Executive Director Alvin J. Buenaventura was interviewed by the Ballerina ng Bayan, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde last 6 February 2012 for the Art 2 Art radio program. The episode featured Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society. The host and the guest talked about the importance of respect for copyright. Buenaventura explained the system that FILCOLS is introducing to the adaceme. He also said that copyright infringement is just a fancy term for disrespect for law, in short, something that is illegal.

Yuchengco Museum teams up with Freelance Writers’ Guild

The Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines (FWGP) and the Yuchengco Museum present a series of writers’ clinics and talks on culture, art, design and heritage.

The first in a series of four writing clinics kicks off at noon on Saturday, Feb. 11. Blogging pioneer Ganns Deen will speak about Blogging 101, Janette Toral on Search Engine Optimization or SEO, and Dannie Alvarez of the Yuchengco Museum will give a theoretical framework on culture, to be followed by Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Arch. Isabel “Cookie” Berenguer Asuncion with a talk on “Let the Eyes Speak, Articulating the Language of Design.”

The Workshop will be hosted and moderated by Ms. PINKY ASERON. Workshop fees are pegged at P1,800, inclusive of attendance in one session, a day pass to the Yuchengco Museum, cocktails and a certificate of attendance or participation.

We accept manuscript and portfolio submissions all year round. Submissions are open to anyone, the only requirement is your submission. More details can be found on our FAQs page.

To try out for authorship, submit three (3) copies of your original manuscript typewritten on short bond paper accompanied by a one-page literary bio-data. On the first page of the manuscript, indicate its genre (short story, nonfiction, poetry, etc.) and the literary contest/s it has won, if any.

"Sinemadyika," by Lauren V. Macaraeg, won first prize in the 1st Annual Lampara Books Children’s Story Writing Contest, winning for its author, an AB Interdisciplinary Studies graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, a cash prize of Php30,00.00. Second prize, with a cash prize of Php15,000.00, went to "Susie Simangot" by Mark Anthony Angeles, a BA Journalism graduate of Polytechnic University of the Philippines and currently a technical support representative with Convergys Philippines, while the third prize, with a cash prize of Php10,000.00 went to "Prince of the Cranes"by Marites Rogado, an AB Political Science graduate of the University of the East and currently taking her MA in Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The contest was sponsored by Lampara Publishing House, Inc. (LPHI).
The three winners were chosen from a field of 178 entries, with 30 entries disqualified due to lack of requirements, by a board of judges composed of:
Ms. Becky Bravo, award-winning author of children’s stories and editor-writer-translator at LPHI;

Fifteen (15) slots, five each from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and one (1) slot each for the Manuel T. Buenafe Writing Fellowship (MTBWF) and the Ricardo Jorge S. Caluen Bursary for Creative Writing or a total of 17 slots are available for writing fellowships to the 19th INWW.

Applicants are required to submit five poems, or, one short story, excerpt of a novel, or, a one-act play in Filipino, English or in Sebuano, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Waray, Chabacano (with English or Filipino translations) along with the applicant’s biodata, two 2X2 photos and a certification that his/her work is original. Please submit a hard copy and a CD with the manuscripts encoded in MS Word. Those submitting excerpts of novels or works-in-progress -- please provide a one page summary of the novel. Unpublished works are preferred and applicants who have attended regional workshops are given priority.

Writing fellows will be given free board and lodging and a travel allowance. Applications must be postmarked on or before March 30, 2012. No applications or manuscripts will be accepted if sent by fax or e-mail. Applicants are also advised to keep copies of their manuscripts since these will not be returned. Announcements of this year’s writing fellows are released during the third week of April 2012.

SINAG amenable to automatic membership with FILCOLS

FILCOLS' Beverly Siy met up with SINAG officers last January 13, 2012 at the Bagong Nayon IV Elementary School, Padilla, Antipolo.

The program of SINAG's celebration of National Arts Month on February was discussed. Included in the program is contests on different forms of art (visual arts, dance, music, poetry and more). A copyright education seminar is also slated for the writers and artists of Antipolo to be held on February 10 at the Cloud 9 Hotel, Brgy. Sta. Cruz. FILCOLS will give a talk on copyright basics.

The proposed Memorandum of Agreement for automatic membership of SINAG to FILCOLS was also discussed. The officers of SINAG found it amenable and the signing of the MOA is now being scheduled.

Present at the meeting were SINAG's Board of Director members John Carlo Tulinao and Cecile Domingo of Georgia International Academy, Zaldy Arbozo, Chair, Alben Del Monte, Jr., Vice-Chair and also the Division Health Coordinator of Division Office, Department of Education, Gloria Esteban, Secretary and a teacher from the host school, and Imelda Galasmino, Deputy Secretary, a teacher from Peace Village Elementary School.

FILCOLS Members from Naga Launch Two Books of Bikol Translations

Ateneo de Naga opens university press, launches 2 books of Bikol translations

Naga City—The Ateneo de Naga University opens 2012 with the formal
opening of its university press by launching books of translations in
Bikol by two of the region's noted contemporary writers. When it is
launched on Friday, January 20, 2012, the AdNU Press is the newest
addition to the list of academic publishing centers in the country.

Fr. Wilmer Joseph S. Tria, AdNU Press Director, discloses that one of
its goals is to become the premier resource of Bikoliana in the world.
As an academic publishing house, AdNU Press is open to all who are
interested to have a manuscript published. Fr. Tria further adds that
optimum quality of materials to be published is a primary requirement,
and, therefore, as practiced by university presses worldwide, all
submitted manuscripts will be subjected to necessary evaluations.

The opening of the press will feature the launch of two books of
translations in Bikol of the works of John Donne, the renowned 16th
century English metaphysical poet, and the German-Austrian poet Rainer
Maria Rilke.

"Doros asin mga Anghel (Air and Angels)," authored by FILCOLS member Victor Dennis T.
Nierva, is a collection of 53 of Donne's poems from his various
compendiums. The book notably includes Bikol translations of all of
Donne's Holy Sonnets. "Doros" is Nierva's second book after
"Antisipasyon (Anticipation)" which won the National Book Award for
Poetry in 2008.

"Minatubod Ako sa Diklom (I Have Faith in Night)," an anthology
comprised of 49 of Rilke's poems translated in Bikol, is the fourth
book of the award-winning poet and FILCOLS member Kristian Sendon Cordero. "Minatubod" includes selections from Rilke's distinguished works, such as "Das
Buch vom mönchischen Leben (The Book of Monastic Life)" and "Das Buch
von der Pilgerschaft (The Book of Pilgrimage)."

In his introduction to Nierva's "Doros," award-winning Bikolano
fictionist and literary scholar, Dr. Carlos O. Aureus considers the

Cordero's "Minatubod," is likewise commended in its introduction by
the Nagueño Philosophy professor Rey Francis M. Hernandez: "One can

for those who have the foolhardiness, the reckless boldness, that
is—and for all its irony—proper only to the poet."

Nierva and Cordero are both faculty members of the AdNU College of
Arts and Sciences, under the Departments of Media Studies and Social
Sciences, respectively.

The January 20 occasion will be highlighted by a lecture on
contemporary academic publishing by Maricor E. Baytion, Director of
the Ateneo de Manila University Press, at 3pm. After the lecture, at
4:30pm, book launch ceremonies will follow. The event will be held at

In April 2010, Mina V. Esguerra published a chick lit/romance novella written for Filipinos on the Amazon Kindle Store. In a year, it sold over 5,000 copies, made it to the "hot new releases" charts on Amazon UK, and was reviewed by readers in the US, Australia, Japan, and the Philippines. In this talk, she shares how she did it, and what the experience taught her about ebooks, independent publishing, and international readers.

FWGP Opens 2012 with FILCOLS Member Ricky Lee on OpenBook

The Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines (FWGP) opens the year with its first OpenBook event on January 20, 2012 in Chef’s Bistro (Scout Gandia near Tomas Morato, Quezon City). The monthly OpenBook sessions feature different authors each month, and for January it will be none other than Ricky Lee, one of the country’s most celebrated writers. Fresh from the success of his latest novel, “Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata,” Lee sits down with the OpenBook audience to talk about Amapola, writing, inspiration, creativity, and other related topics.

Actors Opaline Santos and Ian Lomongo will be reading an excerpt from the novel. Lalangin, a group of young musicians led by Joey Nicolas, will be providing musical entertainment for the night. Event starts at 6:00 p.m. Entrance fee of P200 includes one drink. Proceeds from this event will fund future projects of FWGP, including upcoming OpenBook sessions and ongoing efforts to send help to Sendong victims in Mindanao.

Call for Submission of Manuscripts to the 51st Silliman University National Writers Workshop.

The Silliman University National Writers Workshop is now accepting applications for the 51st National Writers Workshop to be held April 30 to May 18, 2012 in the Silliman University Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village.

This Writers Workshop is offering fifteen fellowships to promising writers who want to have a chance to hone their craft and refine their style. Fellows will be provided housing, a modest stipend, and a subsidy to partially defray costs of their transportation.

To be considered, applicants should submit manuscripts in English on or before 10 February 2012. All manuscripts should comply with the instructions stated below. (Failure to do so will automatically eliminate their entries):

■Manuscripts should be submitted in hard copy on short-size bond paper, using Times New Roman or Calibri in 12 pt. font type.

■Applicants for Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction fellowships should submit three to five entries. Applicants for Poetry fellowships should submit seven to ten poems.

■Applicants for Drama fellowship should submit at least a One-Act Play. For plays beyond the one-act length, a scene accompanied by a synopsis of the entire work should be included.

■Each fiction, non-fiction, or drama manuscript should not be more than 50 pages, double spaced. We encourage you to stay well below the 50 pages, since a submission half that length is more than sufficient as a critical gauge.

■Manuscripts should be accompanied by at least one letter of recommendation from a literature professor or an established writer.

Along with the manuscripts and the recommendation letter, the following requirements should also be included: resume, a notarized certification that the works are original, and two 2X2 ID pictures.

KRITIKA Workshop Application Deadline Extended

The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De La Salle University-Manila has extended the deadline till January 16 for application to KRITIKA 2012 National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism.

In cooperation with the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod (USLS), the workshop will be held on April 22-28. It will focus on critical writing in the following arts: literature, theatre, film, dance, music, architecture, and the visual arts. Eminent critic and professor Rolando Tolentino is director.

Ten applicants will be chosen for the fellowships, which will include transportation stipend and free board and lodging at USLS Balay Kalinungan, Bacolod City.

Manuscript should be an unpublished critical essay. It should be on work by Filipino artist/s. Preferred manuscripts are those that study the work of our National Artists. A study may choose to examine a multi-art form. Manuscripts in a regional language (e.g. Cebuano, Hiligaynon) are welcome and must be accompanied by an abstract in English or Filipino, or a translated version in English or Filipino.

On July 2012, the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Philippine Board on Books for the Young (PBBY) will present the 2nd National Children’s Book Award, giving honor to the 10 best books for children and young adults published during the years 2010 and 2011.

Ayon sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 27:2)

Lahat ay may karapatan na mabigyang-proteksiyon ang kapakanang moral at materyal bunga ng alinmang produksiyong pang-agham, pampanitikan, o pansining na siya ang may-akda.”

Ang human rights ay universal. Ibig sabihin, lahat ng tao sa lahat ng sulok ng mundo ay pantay-pantay, may angking dignidad, may laya at may mga karapatan.

Dahil universal ito, lahat ng gobyerno ay may tungkulin na ipatupad ito sa kanilang mga bansa at i-promote ang pag-aaral at pagrespeto sa mga ito.

Paano ang copyright? Wala naman ang salitang ito sa UDHR.

Totoong wala ang salitang copyright sa UDHR dahil ito ay isang legal term o salitang nilikha para madaling maintindihan ang batas. Pero nakapaloob sa Artikulo 27.2 ang laman ng copyright.

Ano ang copyright? Ito ay ang karapatan ng mga may-akda na mabigyang-proyeksiyon ang kanilang mga kapakanang moral at materyal.

Saan nagmumula ang mga kapakanang moral at materyal? Ito ang bunga ng mga produksiyong (gawa o akda) pang-agham, pampanitikan, o pansining.

Kapakanang moral? E, ano naman ang implication nito? Ibig sabihin ang may-akda, ay may moral na kapakanan sa isinulat niyang nobela. Siya lang ang may karapatang magsabi kung pangalan nga niya ang ilalagay bilang tagapaglikha ng akda. Puwede rin siyang gumamit ng pen name, kung gugustuhin niya. Walang puwedeng magdesisyon tungkol dito kundi ang may-akda.

Kapakanang materyal? E, ano naman ito? Ibig sabihin, ang may-akda lang ang may karapatan sa kikitain mula sa kanyang nobela. Dahil siya ang may karapatan, nasa kanya rin ang kapangyarihan na ilipat ito sa publisher para i-publish ang nobela niya. At ang kasunduan ng may-akda at publisher ay nagiging formal sa pagpirma nila sa isang kontrata. Sa kontrata nakasaad kung papaano ang hatian ng royalty, mga future version o anyo ng nobela at marami pang iba.

Ganito rin ang siste para sa mga nagsulat ng librong pang-agham, o sa taong nagpinta ng landscape, o sa taong nag-sculpture sa marmol.

At dahil kasali sa UDHR ang kapakanang moral at materyal ng may-akda o copyright, ito ay universal din tulad ng human rights.

Ibig sabihin, lahat ng may-akda sa lahat ng sulok na mundo ay pantay-pantay, may angking dignidad, may laya at may mga karapatan. Hindi puwedeng ang mga Pinoy author lang ang bibigyang-proteksiyon ng gobyerno sa Pilipinas. Dapat lahat ng mga author.

Ganito rin ang siste sa ibang bansa tulad ng Singapore, Japan, o United Kingdom. Hindi puwedeng ang mga Singaporean, Japanese o British author lang ang bibigyang-proteksiyon ng kanilang gobyerno. Dapat lahat ng authors.

Hindi saklaw ng border o national boundaries ang human rights at copyright. Kasi nga universal ang human rights. Kasi nga universal din ang copyright.

Inaanyayahan ang mga awtor, publisher, o tagapagmana ng copyright na sumali sa FILCOLS. Ito’y para mabigyang proteksiyon ang kanilang mga akda. Kailangan lamang ay mayroon kayong published works kung kayo ay awtor/publisher o nasa inyo ang kapangyarihang magmanage kung heirs kayo ng awtor. Wala pong membership fee. The Intellectual Property of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and its Satellite Offices (IPSOs) are now accepting applications for Copyright Registration. This service is made available in compliance with the Memorandum of Agreement between IPOPHL and the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) signed last January 25, 2011.

The new Copyright Registration and Deposit System (CoRDS) was designed to make copyright registration more accesible to the general creative public. Registration applications may be submitted to the following offices:

Dark Blue Southern Seas, the literary folio of The Weekly Sillimanian, is now open for submissions of previously unpublished literary works from students and alumni of Silliman University. The folio, to be edited by Mariella Sagarbarria Bustamante with Ian Rosales Casocot as moderator, is accepting short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and graphic fiction in English, Filipino, and Cebuano. You can email your submissions to publisher@flipsidecontent.com. However, before you submit, read the guidelines below.

How to Submit

Email us at the above address.
In your subject line, indicate if it is for Flipside Flames, Flipside Flavors, or FSSF.
Please follow our General Requirements.
We prefer submissions from Asian authors but submissions are open to anyone.
In the body of your email, include your name, contact information, and a brief author bio.
See below for specific requirements unique to the imprint (Romance, Erotica, or Speculative Fiction) you are submitting to.
We do not accept simultaneous submissions.

General Requirements

Submissions must be in English.
Submissions should be in Manuscript Format.
We accept RTF and DOC files. Do not submit in any other file format.
In your submission, please include your query letter, a one-page synopsis of your novel, and the first three chapters of your book. Do not send us the entire manuscript.
The book need not be complete when you make your initial submission but should be complete before we finalize acceptance.
All material must be the author’s own original work and s/he must own the electronic publishing rights.
We accept reprints.

Flipside FLAMES (Romance)

We’re looking for single-title romance novels with a substantial storyline that focuses on the fantasy of true love. The story must feature and develop a central romantic relationship between two complex characters. These characters do not have to end up together by the close of the story, but the novel has to end on an optimistic and emotionally satisfying note. Sex is okay but we prefer that it be hinted at rather than described. No graphic or vulgar description, please—we prefer sexual spark from emotional close-ups and subtle but meaningful gestures rather than from detailed accounts of penetration. The conquest here is not for the climax but for the heart.

Works should have a length of 25,000 – 30,000 words. We are looking for Contemporary Romance (CR), Historical Romance (HR), and Paranormal Romance (PNR) novels. For a clearer definition of these subgenres, you can check the definitions presented in the Romance Writers of America website.

Flipside FLAVORS (Erotica)

We’re looking for single-title erotic novels with well-drawn characters and a substantial storyline that focuses on sexual desire and dynamics. We recognize the wild complexity of the erotic imagination and welcome the relation of various kinks, but they must turn us on, not gross us out. We want sex—lots of it, in fact—but not sex for sex’s sake. We seek sensuality—vivid description and psychosexual insight are appreciated; mechanical accounts listing positions, the number of repetitions, sequence, and the various euphemisms for the word “cock,” not so much.

Works should have a length of 25,000 – 30,000 words. We are open to erotica that caters to men, women, and/or LGBT.

FSSF (Flipside SpecFic)

We’re looking for novels that contain strong elements or sensibilities of science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic realism, alternate history, folklore, superheroes, slipstream, or related nonrealist genres and subgenres. We welcome both traditional narratives and works that play with form. While we appreciate literary and philosophical depth, formal inventiveness, and social critique, we do not want to be bored, boggled beyond cognition, or preached to.

Works should have a length of 40,000 – 60,000 words.

Compensation and Rights

We offer a PhP10,000 (roughly US$240.00) advance against royalties for works we accept.
We claim exclusive, first, world electronic publishing rights for seven years, subject to renewal.

Kilala mo ba si Dred Scott?

Si Dred Scott ay isang African slave. Nakipaglaban siya sa korte sa America para mabuhay nang malaya kasama ang kanyang pamilya.

Matapos ang mahaba at mainit na labanan at mga debate, dinesisyunan ito ng US Supreme Court: hindi siya pwedeng maging American citizen. Dahil hindi citizen ay wala siyang karapatan at ito ay applicable sa kahit na sinong ang ninuno ay African.

Nangyari ito sa US noong panahon ni Abraham Lincoln. Iba-iba pa noon ang batas tungkol sa slavery. May mga state kung saan legal ang slavery pero sa iba namang states, illegal ito. Ibig sabihin walang unibersal o pangkalahatang batas sa slavery.

Ang kaso ni Scott ang isa sa naging mitsa ng madugong digmaan sa Amerika. Nagpang-abot at naglaban ang mga pro-slavery at anti-slavery.

Pagkatapos ng US Civil War ay nagkaroon ng pagbabago sa Konstitusyon ng Amerika. Kasama rito ang pagbuwag sa slavery, pagbibigay ng citizenship sa mga dating slave, at pagbibigay ng automatic citizenship sa mga ipinanganak sa US kahit pa mga slave ang kanilang magulang.

Ganito rin ang kwento ng Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Matapos ang mahaba at mainit na giyera ay nagkaroon ng pagbabago sa pananaw ng lahat. Nagkaroon ng isang unibersal o panlahat na boses pagdating sa usapin ng human rights.

Dahil tanggap ng lahat ang pagiging unibersal ng laman ng deklarasyon ay nagkabisa ito bilang isang international law. Ito ang batas na sasaklaw sa lahat ng tao sa lahat ng bansa.

Lahat ng gobyerno , payag na mabigyang-proteksiyon at i-promote ang mga karapatan at kalayaan ng kanilang mga mamamayan.

Ibig sabihin, may karapatan at laya ang tao kahit maitim, maputi, o madilaw ang balat niya. May karapatan at laya ang tao kahit ano o sino pa ang sinasamba niya, o kahit wala siyang sinasamba. May karapatan at laya ang tao kahit ano ang kulay ng kanyang politika.

Bakit mahalagang magkaroon ng universal feature ang UDHR?

Dahil nga tinanggap ito ng maraming bansa, nagiging basehan ito ng mga national at international law.

At dahil may international law, ang mga disputes dito ay dinadala sa international court. Sa international court naman dinidinig ang mga matinding violation sa human rights tulad ng genocide o ethnic cleansing.

Noong 1997, ibinilang si Dred Scott at asawang si Harriet sa St. Louis Walk of Fame. Ang stars at plake ay nakadisplay sa sidewalk ng Delmar Boulevard sa Missouri. Ito ang pagbibigay-pugay sa mga tao mula sa St. Louis, Missouri na malaki o unibersal ang naging ambag sa kultura ng US.

FILCOLS Board Member Abdon Balde, Jr. wins 2011 Writers Prize from NCCA

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through its Plans, Project Formulation and Program Division (P/PFPD)-Institutional Programs, announced the results of the final judging of the 2011 NCCA Writers Prize which was held on December 8 at the NCCA Bldg in Intramuros, Manila. This year’s winners were:

Novel (Cebuano language) Telesforo Sungkit Jr. for his novel entitled Ang Agalon sa Mga Balod. This is Sungkit’s second time to win in the NCCA Writers Prize. His first novel Mga Gapnod sa Kamad-an, also in Cebuano, won in 2007. The novel will soon be serialized in the Bisaya Magazine.

Poetry (Waray language) Janis Claire Salvacion, for her entry Lalay Han Tagdangkan. Salvacion is with the National Maritime Polytechnic of Cabalawan, Tacloban City.

Short Story (Panay language) Alice Tan Gonzales or her entry Alimango Kag Iban Pa Nga Sugilanon. Gonzales is with the Humanities Division, UP Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo.

Essay (Bicolano language) Engr. Abdon Balde Jr. for his entry SA Runa Kan Ibalong Paghaman sa Epikong Bikolnon. Balde is a retired engineer and has taken up a new profession of being a professional writer.

Awarding ceremonies shall be held in February 2012 in time for the celebration of the Philippine Arts Festival

The LIKHAAN: UP Institute of Creative Writing announces that it is now accepting submissions for possible inclusion in the sixth issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Literature.

Likhaan, the country's leading literary peer-reviewed journal funded by the Office of the UP Diliman Chancellor and published annually, showcases the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP. The ICW fellows and associates take turns serving as its editor.

Previous editors of the journal are ICW director Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, former ICW director and former UP Vice-President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, award-winning writer Pedro ‘Jun’ Cruz Reyes, and Dr. Roland Tolentino, dean of the College of Mass Communication. Likhaan 6 will be edited by Dr. Gémino H. Abad. Associate editors will be National Artist Virgilio S. Almario (for Filipino) and Dr. Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo (for English).

The guidelines follow:

1.For its sixth issue, Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature 6, will accept submissions in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:

• Short stories ranging from about 12 to 30 pages double-spaced, in 11-12 points Times Roman, New York, Palatino, Book Antique, Arial or some such standard font. (A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.)

• A suite of four to seven poems, out of which the editors might choose three to five. (Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.)

• Creative nonfiction (essays, memoirs, profiles, etc.), subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).

• Critical/scholarly essays, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above)

• Excerpts from graphic novels, or full short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6” x 9.” (Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.)

2. All submissions must be original, and previously unpublished.

3. All submissions must be accompanied by a biographical sketch (no more than one or two short paragraphs) of the author, including contact information (address, telephone number, e-mail address).

Call for Submission: Kritika at Kultura

To the rare extent to which Philippine literature in Spanish is recognized to exist, the tradition is almost entirely identified with the life and oeuvre of José Rizal, the late-19th century author of the novels Noli me tangere and El filibusterismo and the poem “Mi último adiós.” The appearance of Filipino fiction and poetry in Spanish precedes Rizal, however, and creative publications in other genres as well thrived in diverse and continuous ways for many decades thereafter.

In the past century, a scattering of published surveys and graduate theses has sought to describe the key authors and texts of Philippine literature in Spanish, but virtually no sustained analytical scholarship on particular literary works, outside those by Rizal, has been produced. The object of this Forum Kritika is to encourage the creation of such a critical corpus and thereby initiate long-lasting investigations into the tradition, perhaps the most unknown in the Spanish-speaking world and among all Asian literatures in Western languages.

Kritika Kultura will publish four to six papers on Philippine literature in Spanish in the August 2012 or February 2013 issue. All topics on specific texts of the tradition are welcome, but in order to diversify the existing range of scholarship, authors are urged to submit essays that do not focus exclusively on Rizal. Theoretical and/or comparative approaches to texts are particularly welcome, as are essays on any literature, defined broadly, produced in Chabacano in any of its variants (Zamboangueño, Caviteño, Ermitaño, etc.).

All submissions will be subject to peer review. Essays should be 5,000-7,000 words long and submitted as a Word document to Adam Lifshey, guest editor of this Forum Kritika, at AML58@georgetown.edu by February 1, 2012. An abstract of 250-400 words should accompany each submission. Regarding style and format, all essays should follow the guidelines of the most recent MLA handbook.

Before electricity, before sonar, before Hollywood, they were the stuff of our fantasies, our nightmares, our folktales. We whispered about them in hushed tones. We stepped politely through forests for fear of arousing their wrath. We cautiously said “bari-bari apo” when walking in the dark.

Have they been eclipsed by modernity? Or have they gone to another place? A place where people still believe in incantos? Perhaps, they are still here. For when fear strikes our hearts, what is it we fear? When our skin trembles at sound/sight/smell/taste, what is it we tremble at? When we are moved by enchantment to still places, to stands of trees, to big rocks, to look at stars, then we know that this earth is old, peopled by beings whose memories are older than ours. Perhaps, older than the stars. Elemental.
What the legends say, may or may not be true; but the legends continue.

This season, we ask you to listen to the old tales and spin new ones. Where are the aswangs? Shape-shifters that they are, what shape have they taken now? When will bakunawa finally swallow the sun and eclipse the world in darkness forever and ever? If people keep cutting down trees, where will the kapres then reside? Have you ever felt cursed, as if your very shadow was dogged? Then did the albularyo dropping candle wax on water tell you who placed a kulam on you? Or did you ever try a love spell for yourself?

Spin it out and spin it out. We’ve got time to tell. We’ll listen to your stories on the full harvest moon of February, a time when, people say, the shapeshifters come out. But we don’t want want no tales of Twilight or New Moon, we want stories that come from us. Our myths that stand for our race. Our legends that speak of our nobility as a people. Say it in English or Filipino. Say it through a painting or a song. But say it. So the world can hear, and know that what binds us as a people, is these old tales running through our blood, making us what we are, what we fear, what we become.

Genre Guidelines:
1) The theme is loosely based on Philippine mythological creatures. From there, you may spin your own web any way you like.
2) Literary submissions are accepted in English and Filipino. Each person may submit up to 5 poems, short stories, essays, or any version of narrative they wish.
3) Art submissions are accepted in JPEG and PDF format. Colored and black and white works are accepted.
4) Music submissions are accepted in MP3 or Wav format. Musicians must submit the lyrics along with the MP3.

CYWA Signs up with FILCOLS for Automatic Membership

CAVITE YOUNG WRITERS ASSOCIATION or CYWA signs up a memorandum of agreement(MOA) with FILCOLS last 19 December 2011 at the Kapihan sa Meadowoods, Meadowoods Executive Village, Bacoor, Cavite.

CYWA President Karl Ivan Dan Orit invited Beverly Siy to their Christmas Party to give a short talk about FILCOLS and also for the MOA signing.

The MOA states that the members of CYWA automatically becomes regular FILCOLS members and they will receive the benefits of a FILCOLS member such as:

a. assistance in seeking permission from other authors or publishers to use the latter’s works.

b. information on copyright, intellectual property and other related issues.

c. access to contact details of publisher-members.

d. assistance in dealing with publisher-members.

e. Once the First Party starts collecting licensing fees from its licensees, the First Party shall distribute the payments to its members in accordance with the results of the survey of works photocopied during the year.

CYWA is an organization of young writers that upholds the preservation and development of Caviteño literature. It recently changed administration. Karl Ivan Dan Orit, a fictionist from University of Santo Tomas and a resident of Bacoor, is now the president.

LIRA was celebrating its 26th Anniversary and the graduation of the LIRA poetry clinic fellows for this year. The fellows also launched their collection of poetry entitled Salamisim that night. FILCOLS provided assistance to the fellows in getting an ISBN for Salamisim from the National Library.

FILCOLS Member Russell Molina Wins Salanga Prize Anew

For the second time, the Philippine Board on Books for Young People awards the 2012 PBBY-Salanga Prize to children’s book author, Russell Molina. Molina’s winning story, “Anong Gupit Natin Ngayon?” is a heartwarming story about a child and his father. An advertising executive, Molina, had previously won the PBBY-Salanga for his story “Sandosenang Kuya” in 2003.

Honorable mention went to Felinda Bagas for her story The Little Girl in a Box,” and Segundo Matias for “Ang Papag ni Tatang.”

The 2012 PBBY-Salanga Prize will be awarded at the National Children’s Book Day celebration on July 17, 2012.

The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) is now accepting entries for the 2012 PBBY-Alcala Prize.

The winner shall be given a cash prize of P25,000.00, a gold medal, and an opportunity to be published. Prizes will be awarded in an appropriate ceremony to be held during the celebration of National Children’s Book Day on July 17, 2012.

Contest Rules:

The contest is open to all Filipino citizens except those who are related to any PBBY member up to the third degree of consanguinity.

Entries must be based on the 2012 PBBY-Salanga Prize-winning story by Russell Molina, “Anong Gupit Natin Ngayon?” Copies of the said story may be requested from the PBBY Secretariat.

All entries must be original unpublished illustrations that have not won in any previous contest.

All entries must consist of three (3) illustrations that are of the same size and medium.

A contestant may send in more than one (1) entry.

Each entry must be signed by a pen name only, preferably on a small piece of paper pasted on the back of each artwork. Entries with a signature or any identifying marks are automatically disqualified.

Together with each entry, contestants must submit a separate envelope, on the face of which only the pen name of the contestant shall appear. The envelope must contain the contestant’s full name, address, contact numbers, short description of background, and notarized certification vouching for the originality of the entry and for the freedom of the organizers from any liability arising from the infringement of copyright in case of publication.

FILCOLS Member Mario Miclat Receives Recognition from UP ICW

Last Dec. 13, 2011, FILCOLS Member and UP ICW Associate Dr. Mario I. Miclat was given a recognition before the officers, associates, fellows, staff members and friends of Institute of Creative Writing at the ICW office, 2F, Faculty Center, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

The ICW Christmas Party was halted momentarily as the emcee signaled the start of the surprise tribute for Dr. Miclat.

Three literary giants delivered their testimonials. First was National Artist for Literature and FILCOLS Chairman Emeritus Virgilio S. Almario. Then came National Artist for Literature and FILCOLS Member Bienvenido Lumbera. Last but definitely not the least, the winner of National Book Awards for Non-fiction, Prof. Romulo Baquiran, Jr.

The Certificate of Appreciation was awarded by Dr. Jose Dalisay, the Director of ICW and also a FILCOLS member. FILCOLS Executive Officer for Membership and Documentation Beverly Siy served as the emcee.

Book Industry Christmas Party held last Dec. 13

The Book Industry Christmas Party was held last Dec. 13, 2011 at the Clubhouse, Valle Verde IV, Pasig City from 7:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m.

More than a hundred guests made up of writers and publishers attended the merry event. During the first part of the program, the election for new members of the Board of Trustees of the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) took place. Then dinner was served as Symfonia band played great music.

FILCOLS Executive Director Alvin Buenaventura gave the welcome remarks. He called Ms. Ani Almario-David to introduce the Guest Speaker.

The Guest Speaker was none other than Mam Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz, the Chairperson of the National Book Development Board (NBDB). She delivered her message to the stakeholders of the book industry. According to her, she cannot contain her excitement to work for the betterment of the book industry and that she is ready for all the challenges ahead.

After her message, some games were played out. Writers and publishers readily formed their own teams to compete in some wacky parlor games. All of the participants received their prizes from Vim Nadera, Angel Montilla and Alvin Buenaventura tandem.

Buenaventura called Sir Lirio P. Sandoval, the BDAP's outgoing president. He gave a testimonial for Dr. Dennis T. Gonzalez, the former Chairperson of NBDB.

In behalf of the BDAP, Sir Lirio also awarded a plaque of appreciation to Dr. Gonzalez for good governance, for all the things that he has done for the industry and for the partnerships that were very beneficial to Filipino publishers, writers and readers.

Dr. Gonzalez was very pleased with the surprise testimonial for him. He responded with a message that narrated his journey with the NBDB and the whole book industry. He shared that the past administration had attempts to demolish the NBDB. That was ten years ago, before he took over. He also shared that initially, he just wanted to apply the lessons he learned in the academe in a government agency. And NBDB was just the right agency for him. And the result was overwhelmingly helpful and beneficial to everyone.

After Dr. Gonzalez's response, the parlor games resumed. Raffle prizes were also given away.

Before the night ended, Mam Esther Pacheco, one of the advisers of BDAP, announced the election results.

Independent IP Made E-Z held in UAP

An IP Made E-Z session was held independently in Li Seng Giap Auditorium, University of Asia and Pacific, Pearl Drive, Ortigas Center, Pasig City last Dec. 8, 2011.

About 80 participants graced the event. There were faculty members and students from UAP, faculty members from Eusebio High School, Santolan High School, San Joaquin Kalawaan High School and Rizal Technological University.

Ms. Moreal Nagarit Camba gave the welcome remarks. She is the chair of the Filipino Department of UAP. Another professor from the same department, Mam Lourdes Bertis, introduced the first speaker, Atty. Dy.

Atty. Mark Robert Dy, creative industries lawyer from Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, discussed the history and nature of copyright. He also focused on the works of Rizal as the Philippines celebrate his 150th year to emphasize the role of copyright in the nation building.

Professor Vivencio Talegon, Jr. from the Filipino Department introduced the second speaker, Ms. Francisco.

Karen Francisco, the only female writer of the Visprint Publishing, shared important tips on crafting interesting reading materials. She also touched on the issue of doing research, be it for academic or creative use. She encouraged everyone to look at TV and Wikipedia as sources of inspiration if one faces a writer's block.

After her talk, an open forum followed.

This session was organized by the Filipino Department of UAP in cooperation with IPOPHL and Visprint Publishing.

Tuwing 10 Disyembre ay ipinagdiriwang sa buong mundo ang Human Rights Day. Ito ay inoorganisa sa pangunguna ng Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, isang ahensiya sa ilalim ng United Nations.

Ang Disyembre 10 ay ang petsa ng pagpapatibay ng UN sa dokumentong Universal Declaration of Human Rights o Pandaigdigang Pagpapahayag ng mga Karapatang Pantao.

Ang naturang pagpapahayag ang naging basehan ng mga batas at policy ng maraming bansa tungkol sa human rights.

Mula sa UN declaration, lahat daw ng tao ay ipinanganak na malaya at may angking dignidad. At ang pagrespeto sa human rights ang daan sa isang mapayapa, makatarungan, at maunlad na mundo.

Dagdag pa, ang kalayaan at dignidad ay hindi puwedeng yurakan ng kahit na sino lalo na ng gobyerno. Ang kalayaan at dignidad ay hindi base sa relihiyon, kulay ng balat, antas ng edukasyon, posisyon sa lipunan, pagiging mayaman o mahirap, kasarian, at iba pa.

Katangi-tangi ang taong 2011 sa kuwento ng human rights dahil ito ang taon ng Arab Spring. Milyon-milyong mga tao ang nagtipon, nagpahayag, at nagpabagsak sa mga diktaturyang nagpahirap sa kanila sa mahabang taon.

Ang mga diktador ng Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon at iba pang karatig-bansa ay nagsibagsakan na parang mga pitsa ng domino. Si Ghadafy ng Lebanon ay agad na hinatulan ng taumbayan at binaril. Si Mubarak ng Egypt ay kasalukuyang nakakulong at nililitis.

Maraming natutuwa dahil namulat ang mga tao sa kanilang angking karapatan bilang tao. Ang respeto sa human rights ang siyang naging batayan ng mga botante sa unang eleksiyon na ginanap sa Egypt. Halos 30 years din silang walang layang pumili ng lider at gobyerno.

Ang authors, artists, at iba pang manlilikha ay madalas na kinukulong dahil mapanganib ang kanilang mga gawa sa mata ng mga diktador.

Kaya nakasaad din sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights ang mga karapatan ng mga alagad ng sining. Ito ang sinasabi ng Artikulo 27.2 “Ang bawat tao’y may karapatan sa pangangalaga ng mga kapakanang moral at materyal bunga ng alinmang produksiyong pang-agham, pampanitikan, o pansining na siya ang may-akda.”

Inaanyayahan ang mga awtor, publisher, o tagapagmana ng copyright na sumali sa FILCOLS. Ito’y para mabigyang proteksiyon ang kanilang mga akda. Kailangan lamang ay mayroon kayong published works kung kayo ay awtor/publisher o nasa inyo ang kapangyarihang magmanage kung heirs kayo ng awtor. Wala pong membership fee. Ang Diktador at ang Karapatan ng mga Author

Kahit kailan, hindi pa ako nakakakilala ng taong gustong mapasailalim sa isang diktador. Ayaw natin sa diktador na president, diktador na propesor, diktador na boss, diktador na empleyado (oo, meron no'n), o diktador na asawa.

Si Ferdinand Marcos ay ang diktador na pinabagsak natin at patuloy na kinamumuhian ng marami. Meron pa ngang naglagay ng bomba at nagpasabog sa higanteng bust niya sa La Union.

Ano kaya ang gagawin mo kapag nalaman mo na isa sa impluwensiya ni Marcos ay dala pa rin ng marami sa kanilang isip at gawa?

Noong 1977 ay inilabas ni Marcos ng Presidential Decree 1203. Ito ay ang compulsory licensing o reprinting ng mga librong madalas ginagamit sa mga schools.

Bilang diktador iniutos ni Marcos ang sapilitang pagpaparami ng kopya ng mga librong educational, scientific at cultural. Ang mga reprint ay ibinibenta sa murang halaga. Walang nagawa ang mga author na may-ari ng copyright.

Pa-pogi points niya ito sa mga estudyante at aktibistang propesor. Syempre ang na-violate naman ay ang karapatan ng mga author.

Ginawa ito ni Marcos bilang “temporary or emergency measure” dahil mataas masyado ang presyo ng libro. At ayon sa PD 1203, mahal ang libro kapag lampas sa 35 pesos ang presyo nito.

Dahil sa utos ni Marcos, kaliwa’t kanan ang naging violation sa human rights ng mga author. Karapatan ng mga author ang copyright ayon sa Article 27.2 ng Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Maraming publisher at photocopy shops ang yumaman sa pawis ng mga author. Naging gasgas na alibi kapag nagpa-photocopy ng mga libro ang “mahal kasi kaya pa-xerox na lang ako.”

Ito ang bukambibig ng marami, mapa-propesor at mapa-estudyante.

Noong 1995 ay naging batas ang Republic Act 8293 o ang Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Ayon sa RA 8293 ang PD 1203 ni Marcos ay wala nang bisa.

Kaya dapat ay respetuhin na ng lahat ang human rights ng mga author. Pero nangyayari ba ito?

Marami pa ring propesor at estudyante ang patuloy na yumuyurak sa karapatan ng mga author. Sinasabi nilang galit sila sa diktador, galit sila kay Marcos. Pero ang impluwensiya ni Marcos ay patuloy na dumadaloy sa kanilang isip at gawa.

Dec. 3-Freelance Writers Guild of the Philippines 1st Christmas Party

Freelance Writers Guild of the Philippines held its 1st Christmas Party and Grand Eyeball last Dec. 3, 2011 at the Chef’s Bistro, Tomas Morato cor. Scout Gandia St., Quezon City from 6:00 p.m. till 11:30 p.m. More than 30 writers from different fields gathered for this event. It kicked off with the introduction portion where everybody got the chance to share information about one’s self. It was followed by the welcome remarks of Charmaine Tang, the owner of Chef’s Bistro.

A poetry reading was held thereafter and Ime Morales, the founder of FWGP introduced the different committees of the organization. She invited everyone to join at least one committee to be able to lend a hand in coming up with activities for the members. Prizes were won through raffle and a book exchange, the FWGP’s version of exchange gift, was held.

Bebang Siy, FILCOLS Executive Officer for Membership and Documentation, served as the night’s emcee.

She ended the event with a reminder: through organizations, writers become a more powerful voice in the publishing industry. Another evidence of the saying There is strength in numbers.

Award-winning novelist and FILCOLS Board of Trustees member Charlson Ong, poet D.M. Reyes and poet-critic J. Neil Garcia compose this year’s prestigious panel of judges.

The Madrigal-Gonzalez Award is administered by the UP ICW and is generously sponsored by Atty. Gizela Gonzalez-Montinola and the Madrigal-Gonzalez family. Each year, alternating between Filipino and English, the UP ICW selects from the list of first-time authors and their works and grants the cash prize of P50,000 and a plaque during Writers Night. Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts presents Archipelagic Feasts, Tropical Disasters: 2011 Philippine PEN Congress on the Literature of Survival on December 1-2, 2011 (Thursday-Friday), 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. to be held at the Silangan Hall, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Bring a Book! Your Ticket to Writers Night 2011

For around 15 years, the LIKHAAN: UP Institute of Creative Writing has been hosting the Writers Night, an annual reunion and Christmas Party that has become a tradition among writers, artists and lovers of the written word. This year's Writers Night will be a toast to the country's newest literary productions, kicking off with the Madrigal-Gonzalez Award and on to a variety of book launches and performances.

In celebration of their recent literary achievements, we are inviting all writers to bring a copy of their latest book to the event. These books will earn a place in the Gonzalo-Gonzalez Reading Room collection, which boasts of the best in contemporary Philippine literature. We also welcome literary books by non-Filipino authors for the UP Writers Club fund-raiser.

UP Writers Night 2011 is happening on December 9, Friday, from 5:00 PM onward. The 11th Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award will showcase this year's finalists in a forum on contemporary literature and an awarding ceremony. What follows are the launch of LIKHAAN Journal 5, the latest issue of the UP ICW's prestigious refereed journal and the first to be widely available online; the launch of UST books; and the presentation and launch of the project AKDANG BUHAY: The Writerly Life. The evening's festivities also include performances, open mic and a book bazaar.

FILCOLS Treasurer and Board Member Lirio P. Sandoval gave the welcome remarks at the second Philippine Digital Publishing Conference. Sandoval is the president of Book Development Association of the Philippines, one of the organizers of the event. Also dubbed as the Future of the Book 2, it was held at the Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City from November 28-29, 2011.

FILCOLS Executive Director Alvin Buenaventura served as the moderator on the last day of the two-day conference that featured plenary sessions and workshops on how publishers can survive and eventually thrive in the digital age. Local publishers and key industry players were present.

On the first day, Sandoval shared the limelight with Neni Sta. Romana Cruz, the new NBDB Chair. She also delivered the opening remarks.

Bill McCoy, executive director of the International Digital Publishing forum, talked about Digital Publishing Standards with an overview of SML, ePub, NextPub, Mobipocket and other digital publishing formats through videoconference.

Vibe Technologies through Chris Datol shared the basic steps for publishers on building compliant e-books for cross-platform publishing.

Nelson John, a consultant for Technical Solutions Group in Adobe Southeast Asia specializing in the Creative Product Suites. Through videoconferencing as well, he talked about generating direct sales with a B2C platform.

A plenary session was held where case studies of digital publishing projects worldwide were presented as well as the new tablet education initiatives in Philippines and the corresponding roll out of digital content by Philippine educational publishers. Speakers were Neil Andrew Nocon, a board member of the second district of Laguna, Jose Maria "Toots" Policarpio, the executive director of Diwa Learning Systems and the Vice-President of Philippine Educational Publishers Association or PEPA, and Engineer Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada, Jr., the technology consultant for the De La Salle University.

Anthony de Luna led the plenary session about selling e-books on different platforms on the second day. De Luna is a pioneer in the Philippine digital publishing. He is the president and CEO of Flipside Digital Content Company, Inc. Flipside is the company behind Flipreads, a premiere source of e-books from and about the Philippines and Asia. He was followed by Harvey Libarnes, the general manager of Hand Interactive. He is a veteran in digital product management.

Winnie Hung, the regional segment manager of Hewlett-Packard for Southeast Asia opened the plenary session about the future of the printing and the connection of long tail of print and e-books to print-on-demand technology. She was followed, after lunch, by Central Books' Vice-President and FILCOLS Board Member Paolo Sibal. He discussed the potential of monthly subscription set up for some books like e-SCRA.

Chris Datol went back to the stage to discuss digital bookselling. He was joined by Sabrina Oliveros, business development manager of Vibal Foundation and one of the project leads of Vee Press and Ace Chin of the Vibe.

The last segment of the conference was a plenary session led by Dr. Lloyd Espiritu, an associate professor of DLSU Manila and a representative of LG & M Corporation, publisher of Chikiting Story, Harvey Libarnes and Fran Ong of Tahanan Books. They talked about the changing needs and preferences of the readers. They also pointed out that it is very important to consider the next generation's reading habits and attitudes because they are the market of the future books.

NBDB Executive Director Andrea Pasion-Flores delivered the closing remarks by challenging everyone to maintain the quality of their content to help in the development of the Philippines as the publishing hub of Asia.

Future of the Book 2 was organized by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) led by Atty. Andrea Pasion-Flores, the Executive Director, the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), and Vibal Foundation Inc., the non-profit arm of leading educational publisher Vibal Publishing.

Alam mo bang ang Bible ay isang library?

Oo. Isa itong maliit na library dahil binubuo ito ng iba’t ibang libro na isinulat ng iba’t ibang tao sa iba’t ibang lugar at panahon.

Mahalaga ang library dahil ito ang siyang nagiging treasure chest ng mga tradition, kultura, at kasaysayan.

Noong gawa pa sa putik ang mga libro, ito ay niluluto sa pugon para tumigas. Baked books kumbaga. Libo-libo ang baked books na nadiskubre sa Niniveh, isang lumang city sa Babylon.

Ang mga Greek ay meron ding library at isa sa pinakasikat ay ang Library of Alexandria. Ito ang nagsilbing sentro ng kultura at pagkatuto bago sumikat ang mga Romano.

Ang library naman ng mga Romano ay kadalasang nahahati sa dalawang uri. Ang isa ay para sa mga librong nakasulat sa Greek at ang isa ay para sa mga nakasulat sa Latin. Parang ngayon, may English at Filipino books section.

Siyempre ang mga Chinese, hindi magpapahuli. Meron silang mga libro na nakasulat sa silk. At pati ang lalagyan ay gawa sa silk. Wala tayong panama doon.

Noong bumagsak ang Roman Empire, at nagkagera-gera sa Europa, mahalaga ang mga library sa loob ng mga monasteryo at simbahang Katoliko dahil sila ang nagtatago ng mga sinaunang libro.

Marami sa mga bagong kaalaman natin ay mula sa mga librong inalagaan ng mga monk. Halimbawa ay ang buhay ni Julius Ceasar, mga kaalaman tungkol sa algebra, geometry, at philosophy.

Kaya lahat ng mga bansa mayaman o mahirap man ay gumagawa ng paraan para makapagtayo at makapagbukas ng sariling National Library.

Meron na tayong maliit na library noong 1887 na nasa Intramuros. Itinaguyod ito ng mga Kastila. Pero nagkaroon lang tayo ng talagang National Library natin noong panahon na ng mga Kano, sa pamamagitan ng Act no. 96 ng Philippine Commission noong 1901.

Oo, 110 years old na ang ating National Library! 'Yong building sa T. M. Kalaw ay naitayo lang noong 1961. Medyo late na. Maraming lugar ang pinaglipat-lipatan bago tayo nagkaroon ng permanenteng building.

Kung ang Bible ang siyang naging mobile library ng mga Kristiyano at naging instrumento sa pagpapalaganap sa kuwento ni Jesus, ang ating National Library at mga satellite librariy nito ang instrumento sa pagpapalaganap sa kuwento ng mga Pinoy para sa mga kabataan at sa mga dayuhan.

"Gusto nating ipaalam sa lahat ng gumagamit ng copyrighted materials na ang copyright ay isang human right. Kung naintindihan natin na human right ito, ipaglalaban at rerespetuhin natin ito," sabi ni Alvin Buenaventura, FILCOLS Executive Director.

Ipinaliwanag ni Buenaventura ang iba't-ibang uri ng IP katulad ng patent, trademark at ang karapatang-sipi. Binanggit din niya ang mga karapatang nakapaloob sa IP at kung paano nito mapapabuti ang may-akda, ang mambabasa at ang bansa.

Ayon sa kanya, ang IP ay ang mga produkto ng kaisipan ng tao at katulad ng iba pang pag-aari, ito ay may karapatang dapat bigyan ng karampatang pagrespeto alinsunod sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 27 at 23.

Nakasaad sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 27 (2) na "Ang lahat ay may karapatan upang protektahan ang moral at materyal na interes buhat sa mga maka-agham, malikhaing gawa kung saan siya ang may-akda nito"; samantalang nakalathala naman sa artikulo 23 "Ang lahat na naghanapbuhay ay dapat makatanggap ng tamang kabayaran para masiguro na mapupunan nito ang pangangailangan niya at ang kaniyang pamilya."

"Ang goal ng event na ito ay upang matulungan ang Unibersidad ng [kaalaman sa] crafting the university copyright policy, makapagsulat ang mga estudyante nito ng mga akda at make a respect for copyright a part of their life," ani Buenaventura.

Samantala, tinalakay naman ni Eros Atalia, manunulat ng Cinemalaya 2011 entry na Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me, ang malikhaing pagsusulat kabilang na ang mga maikling kuwento, tula, nobela at iba pa kung paano makakalikha nito.

"Art is a selective recreation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value of judgement," wika ni Atalia.

Ayon sa kanya, iba't-iba ang pagkakaintindi natin sa realidad kaya maaari tayong makabuo ng isang malikhaing gawa mula sa mga ito. Kaugnay nito, hinimok niya na gumawa ng mga akda ang mga mag-aaral at propesor at dapat magkaroon ito ng karapatang-sipi.

Ang FILCOLS ay may 200 na miyembro para sa may-akda at manlilimbag. Ito ay nagbibigay ng seminar sa buong Pilipinas upang makaimpluwensiya sa mga tao para sa mga ginawang batas ukol sa karapatang-sipi at lumagda rin ito ng kasunduan sa 10 bansa na rerespeto sa mga karapatang-sipi ng Pilipinas.

The 2nd Manila International Literary Festival entitled The Great
Philippine Book Café was a huge success. It was held at the Ayala
Museum, Makati last November 16 to 18, 2011. Writers, publishers,
reading enthusiasts, artists and interested individuals flocked to
Ayala Museum every single day of the Fest.

Keynote speech entitled Where in the world is the Filipino Writer? was
delivered by no less than the great critic and researcher Resil R.
Mojares of Cebu. Two Pulitzer Prize winners Edward P. Jones (The Known
World, 2004) and Junot Diaz (The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,
2008) flew in from the US just for this event. They talked about
writing from the margins. Both of them are from minority backgrounds
in the US and yet their works were able to penetrate the mainstream of American
publishing. In the next few days, Jones and Diaz met and talked with
the Filipino audience (mostly writers as well). Book signing after
their talks were also held.

On the first day, the following topics were discussed by experts from
different parts of the country and from abroad: novel writing, hunting
manuscripts and selling them to the publishers, world book market,
world readership, putting literature within context, literary theories
and more.

On the second day, writing away from home, cross-cultural experiences,
literature that offends, assessment of the Philippine book industry,
writing for young adults, reaching women readers, writing crime,
horror and suspense, Philippine children’s literature for the world,
writing memoir, features for folktales, myths, legends in fiction,
many forms of the novel, being a bestseller and writing non-fiction
were tackled.

On the third and last day: writing about war/conflict, writing in the
regional language, mentoring the writer, the many poetic forms,
transforming literature into movies, bringing literature to life by
different media and the traditional bonding/family moment, strategies
to make kids love reading, promotion for the books and
the authors, humor writing, the basics of fiction and non-fiction
writing were discussed.

The atmosphere was strikingly similar to that of the fiestas.

Indeed, it was a very productive and creative (and of course,
colourful) way to show the world that Filipino writers and the
Philippine publishing industry have excellent products and they need
help to get their works out there in the global arena.

The event was organized by National Book Development Board headed by the
indefatigable Atty. Andrea Pasion-Flores with support from Filipinas
Heritage Library, Philippine Airlines, National Book Store, Penguin,
Central Books, Vibal Foundation, Book Development Association of the
Philippines, Ayala Museum, Manila Bulletin and the Embassy of the US
Manila.

Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society or FILCOLS joined the
celebration of the Philippine Book Development Month (through the
aforementioned event). FILCOLS Executive Officer for Membership and
Documentation Beverly W. Siy came as a speaker and as a participant as
well. Her sessions included: When Literature Offends, Writing the Woman
Reader and What's so Funny (humor writing).

This is how a sweet November transforms into the busiest month of the year. And all because of literature.

FILCOLS congratulates all the FILCOLS members who won in the 30th National Book Awards.

UST Publishing House won “Publisher of the Year” Award.

FILCOLS Board of Trustees member Charlson Ong snatched the National Book Award for Fiction for his “Blue Angel, White Shadow: A Novel” (UST Publishing House).

“Sagad sa Buto: Hospital Diary at Iba Pang Sanaysay” (UST Publishing House) by FILCOLS member Romulo P. Baquiran, Jr. won the National Book Award for Non-Fiction Prose.

For the Social Science category - “Sanghiyang sa Mundo ng Internet” by Cavite-based FILCOLS member Rhoderick Nuncio (Vibal Foundation, Inc.) emerged as the winner.

The awarding ceremony was held last 12 November 2011 at the National Museum, Manila.

Ang Philippine Book Development Month ay ipinagdiriwang tuwing Nobyembre.

Ang selebrasyon ay pinangungunahan ng National Book Development Board. Isang ahensiya ng gobyerno ang NBDB na inatasan ng batas na palaguin ang industriya ng paglilimbag ng libro sa bansa.

Ang mga paaralan sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa ay may kanya-kanyang pakulo sa pagdaraos ng buwan ng pagpapalago ng Pinoy books. May mga poster making contest, storytelling session, at read along ng mga sikat at papasikat pa lang na mga akdang Pinoy.

Ang highlight ng selebrasyon para sa 15th Philippine Book Development Month ay ang Manila International Literary Festival.

Bukod sa sikat na Pinoy authors tulad nina Butch Dalisay at Jun Balde, nag-imbita rin ang NBDB ng mga foreigner tulad nina Junot Diaz at Edward P. Jones.

Si Dalisay ang nagsulat ng “Soledad’s Sister” na short-listed sa Man Asian Literary Awards. Napakarami na niyang naisulat na akda bukod sa Soledad’s Sister.

Ito namang si Balde, tatlo sa kanyang sampung aklat ay tumanggap ng National Book Award.

Si Diaz ang sumulat ng nobelang “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.” Nagwagi siya ng Pulitzer Prize para sa akdang ito.

Samantala, si Jones naman ang nagsulat ng “The Known World” na nanalo rin ng Pulitzer Prize.

Ang Pulitzer Prize ay itinaguyod sa Amerika ng publisher na si Joseph Pulitzer para sa magagaling na akda sa larangan ng journalism, literature, at music. Maliban sa sertipiko ay may premyo ring sampung libong dolyares ang akdang mapipili.

Bakit kailangang pagtagpuin sa Manila International Literary Festival ang mga Pinoy at foreigners? Kasi sa pamamagitan ng mga ganitong event, lalong lumalago ang publishing industry.

Natututo ang mga Pinoy sa mga bisita. At nakikilala naman ng mga dayuhan ang mga Pinoy author at ang mga gawa nila. Ito ang nagiging daan para sa mga joint publishing venture o di kaya ay distribution ng Pinoy works sa kanilang mga bansa.

Tatlong araw ang festival at siyempre pa, kasama sa mga pag-uusapan ang mga paksang tulad ng pagsusulat sa Regional Language, ang Philippine Children’s Literature for the World, at iba pa.

Narinig ko ang mismong linyang ito mula sa bibig ng isang sikat na propesor: Galit ako sa copyright.

Idinagdag ko na lang ‘yong ikalawang linya sa pamagat ng column natin ngayong araw.

Bakit ko naman dinagdagan pa itong sinabi niya? Kasi naman, kung naiintindihan niya ang copyright ay dapat magpasalamat pa siya rito.

Ano ba ang copyright?

Ito ang proteksiyon na ibinibigay ng batas sa mga author ng literary, scientific, at artistic works. Ano ang mga halimbawa nito? Ang mga nobela, tula, at short story ay literary works. Ang mga librong isinulat para sa mga engineer, doctor, o nurse ay nasa hanay ng scientific works. Kasama naman sa artistic works ang paintings, illustrations, photographs, sculptures, visual arts, at designs.

Dalawa pang rights ang binibigyan ng proteksiyon sa ilalim ng copyright. Tama. Dalawang rights sa ilalim ng copyright.

Una, ang moral right. Ibig sabihin, hindi mo puwedeng kunin ang isang libro at burahin ang pangalan ng author at ilagay ang sarili mong pangalan. Violation ito ng moral right ng author.

Bakit? Dahil ang author lang ang may karapatang ilagay ang pangalan niya sa kanyang akda o gawa. Siya lang ang may kapangyarihang ilagay ang kahit anong pangalan o pen name na gusto niya sa kanyang akda o gawa.

Ikalawa, ang material right. Ibig sabihin, karapatan ng author na mag-benefit materially sa kanyang gawa. Kaya ang libro ay pinaparami ang kopya sa pamamagitan ng printing press para mas marami ang bumili nito. Kumikita dito ang author. At dahil binigyan niya ng kapangyarihan ang publisher (sa pamamagitan ng kontrata) ay kumikita rin ang publisher dito.

Bakit nila kailangang kumita? Hindi ba obvious na tao rin silang kailangan kumain, magbayad ng pamasahe, magbayad ng upa, magbayad ng tubig, magbayad ng kuryente, at magtaguyod ng pamilya?

Kabuhayan ito ng author. Kailangan nilang mabuhay mula rito. E, bakit dito pa? E, anong gusto mo? Mangholdap sila?

Ngayon, naiintindihan mo na ba ang copyright? Moral right at material right lang ‘yon. Dalawang M. Kapangalan ng isang masarap at matamis na tsokolate.

Balik tayo kay Propesor.

Nagtanong ako sa kanya. E, Sir, ibig sabihin okey lang sa inyo na ang i-submit ng estudyante ninyo bilang fulfillment sa requirement ay ang inyong award-winning essay? Buburahin niya ang pangalan ninyo at ilalagay niya ang pangalan niya.

Sagot ni Sir: subukan niyang gawin iyon at hindi lang failing grade ang ibibigay ko sa kanya, ipapa-kick-out ko pa siya.

At bago ako umalis ay inalok ako ni Sir ng kanyang bagong libro. Mura lang naman daw. Below P200. Siyempre pa, bumili ako.

The 2nd Manila International Literary Festival set for this November

MANILA, Philippines - Two Pulitzer Prize winners Junot Diaz, author of the acclaimed The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and Edward P. Jones, author of the prizewinning novel The Known World will attend the 2nd Manila International Literary Festival from Nov. 16 to 18 at the Ayala Museum in Makati City.

This year’s theme is “The Great Philippine Book Café,” with a bow to one of the country’s own great writers, STAR columnist Alfred “Krip” Yuson, who wrote the award-winning The Great Philippine Jungle Energy Café.

Diaz and Jones will be joined by other renowned international and local authors, publishers, literary agents, and book lovers to celebrate books, literature, and the writing craft.

Diaz and Jones, are US writers of minority descent (Diaz’s family is from the Dominican Republic, while Jones is African-American). Together with Filipino writer and scholar Resil Mojares, they will be the festival’s plenary speakers. They will speak about writing from the margins. They will also be featured in conversations and book signings during the festival.

Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao follows the life of a geeky, overweight Dominican boy living in an impoverished American district and the curse that has plagued his family for generations. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2008. Jones’s The Known World is a historical novel that chronicles the ownership of black slaves by free black people as well as by whites. It won the Pulitzer in 2004.

Aside from panels on different topics about reading and literature, The Great Philippine Book Café will also feature performances, book launches, and a book fair. The Festival hopes to serve the literary and publishing communities as a venue to make invaluable contacts and discuss issues important to them.

Ayon sa kanya, ang IP ay ang mga produkto ng kaisipan ng tao at katulad ng iba pang pag-aari, ito ay may karapatang dapat bigyan ng karampatang pagrespeto alinsunod sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 27 at 23.

Nakasaad sa Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 27 (2) na "Ang lahat ay may karapatan upang protektahan ang moral at materyal na interes buhat sa mga maka-agham, malikhaing gawa kung saan siya ang may-akda nito"; samantalang nakalathala naman sa artikulo 23 "Ang lahat na naghanapbuhay ay dapat makatanggap ng tamang kabayaran para masiguro na mapupunan nito ang pangangailangan niya at ang kaniyang pamilya."

"Ang goal ng event na ito ay upang matulungan ang Unibersidad ng [kaalaman sa] crafting the university copyright policy, makapagsulat ang mga estudyante nito ng mga akda at make a respect for copyright a part of their life," ani Buenaventura.

Samantala, tinalakay naman ni Eros Atalia, manunulat ng Cinemalaya 2011 entry na Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me, ang malikhaing pagsusulat kabilang na ang mga maikling kuwento, tula, nobela at iba pa kung paano makakalikha nito.

"Art is a selective recreation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value of judgement," wika ni Atalia.

Ayon sa kanya, iba't-iba ang pagkakaintindi natin sa realidad kaya maaari tayong makabuo ng isang malikhaing gawa mula sa mga ito. Kaugnay nito, hinimok niya na gumawa ng mga akda ang mga mag-aaral at propesor at dapat magkaroon ito ng karapatang-sipi.

Ang FILCOLS ay may 200 na miyembro para sa may-akda at manlilimbag. Ito ay nagbibigay ng seminar sa buong Pilipinas upang makaimpluwensiya sa mga tao para sa mga ginawang batas ukol sa karapatang-sipi at lumagda rin ito ng kasunduan sa 10 bansa na rerespeto sa mga karapatang-sipi ng Pilipinas.

Ang nagbigay ng pandangal na pananalita ay walang iba kundi ang pangulo ng Pilipinas na si Noynoy Aquino.

Ano ang ginagawa ng biyenan mo kapag wala na siyang pera? Nagrereklamo? Nangungulit sa mga kapitbahay na nangutang na inabot na ng pagbagsak ng rehimen ni Ghadaffi e ayaw pa ring magsibayad?

Eto ang ginagawa ng kumpare ko para kumita: gumagastos siya!

Mukhang baligtad ang utak ng pare ko pero me tama siya. Halimbawa, kung gusto niyang kumita sa pagtitinda ng gulay, dapat ay bumili muna siya ng mga paninda.

Ang ganitong parang baligtad na pag-iisip ang dahilan kung bakit pinagtitiyagaan ng maraming magulang na mabigyan ng magandang edukasyon ang mga anak. Gumagastos sa tuition fee, sa mga gamit sa eskuwela tulad ng libro, at iba pa. Bakit? Kasi pagka-graduate ay mataas ang posibilidad na magkaroon ng trabahong may mataas na sahod ang kanilang mga anak.

Ganito rin ang dahilan kung bakit may marketing campaign ang mga nasa negosyo. Kahit magaling ang formula at mabango ang shampoo, hindi ito bibilhin ng mga me balakubak kung hindi muna gagastos sa advertising ang isang shampoo company.

Malaki ang gastos sa creative minds na nasa likod ng ads. Milyon ang ginagastos pambayad sa magaganda at guwapong artista (na kunwari ay biktima ng balakubak). Milyon din ang ginagastos sa mga espasyo at airtime sa radyo, TV, at diyaryo. Pero milyon-milyong piso rin naman ang balik nito dahil sa dami ng taong nakukumbinsi na bumili ng shampoo.

May tinatawag na marketing at advertising plan ang mga negosyo. Me budget ito. Ibig sabihin hindi puwedeng itaya ng kumpanya ang lahat ng pera nila sa marketing at advertising lang. Kasi baka ma-zero naman sila.

Ganito rin ang siste sa publishing. Kung gusto ng author na kumita ng maraming royalty ay dapat na marami ang bumili ng libro niya. Gusto rin siyempre ng publisher na kumita dahil kailangan nilang mabawi ang kanilang paunang gastos sa pagpapa-publish ng libro.

Ang publisher kasi ang nagbayad sa mga taong nagtrabaho para mabuo ang libro (bukod sa author). Ang publisher ang bumili ng papel at nagbayad sa printer. Ang perang ipinambayad naman sa printer ay ipinambayad din sa kuryente, sa renta sa opisina, sa suweldo ng mga empleyado, at iba pang gastusin.

May mga author na iniaaasa na lang ang marketing ng libro nila sa publisher. 'Yong iba, humihingi ng tulong sa Facebook friends, sa mga textmate, o sa mga officemate.

May mga author na all-out attack sa pagpo-promote ng libro. Lahat ng gimmick ay ginagawa, me interview dito, me talk doon, para mas marami ang bumili ng kanyang libro.

Unfortunately, may mga author naman na sa sobrang focus na ma-promote ang libro ay nakakalimutan na me regular jobs silang pinagkukunan ng regular na sahod (hindi na pumapasok sa trabaho at magpapalusot na nagtatrabaho pa rin naman. Pero siyempre palusot lang 'yon. Feeling nila, lusot na sila. Dapat kasi ay balanced ang diskarte.) Minsan tuloy, nakakalimutan na rin ng mga author na mas maganda ang kita kapag mas marami pa silang isinusulat. Napokus na lang kasi sila sa pagbebenta ng kanilang libro.

Kaya bihira ang mga nilalang na author na, publisher pa! Mahirap kasing ibalanse ang creative side at ang business side. Pero ang bottom line ay ganon pa rin: hindi tayo makakaani, kung hindi muna tayo magtatanim. Hindi tayo kikita kung hindi muna tayo gagastos.

Kaya sa susunod na magreklamo ang biyenan mo dahil wala siyang pera, sabihin mo, gumastos muna siya at bumili ng mga sangkap para makapagluto siya ng masarap ng turon. Para may kita, dapat siguruhin lang niyang magbabayad ang mga kapitbahay. In cold cash!

Mahirap turuan ang taong sa palagay niya ay alam na niya ang lahat.

Ang taong “know-it-all” ay sapat ang alam este labis ang alam kaya hindi siya nakikinig sa ibang tao. Dahil sa tingin niya, siya lang ang dapat na pinakikinggan. Hindi siya nagbabasa ng isinulat ng iba. Dahil sa tingin niya, ang isinulat lang niya ang dapat basahin.

Ang karunungan mula sa taong “know-it-all” ay hindi puwedeng kuwestiyunin. Dapat daw itong tanggapin nang maluwag sa kalooban at nang may pagpapakumbaba.

Ito ang mga uri ng taong nakapaligid kay Socrates sa Athens noong 500 BCE. Ito ang mga uri ng taong gusto niyang pupugin ng tanong para ma-expose. Oo, fossilized na sa history ng mundo ang mga taong ganito.

At nagsimula si Socrates sa pag-amin na ang alam niya sa sarili ay wala siyang alam. Mas maraming alam ang mga taong nasa paligid niya. Ang pag-amin na wala siyang alam ang nagdala sa kanya para magtanong nang magtanong nang magtanong sa mga taong “know-it-all.”

Ano ba ang tama? Ano ang makatarungan?

Dahil sa makulit na pagtatanong ni Socrates ay maraming know-it-all ang napahiya. Bakit? Kasi hindi naman pala ganon karami ang alam nila.

Ang iba ay nagalit dahil ang style ng pagtatanong ni Socrates ay nakaka-impluwensiya sa mga kabataan. Dumami ang mga hindi na basta naniniwala sa mga taong “know-it-all.”

Kinasuhan si Socrates ng mga lider ng Athens. Kinondena dahil sa salang “corrupting the minds of the youth.” Ang pagtuturo daw niya na magtanong at kuwestiyunin ang lahat sa paligid ay lason sa isip ng mga bata.

Sa halip na pumayag maipatapon sa ibang lugar ay tinanggap ni Socrates ang kamatayan. Gusto niyang ipakita sa mga “know-it-all” na handa siyang mamatay sa kanyang pinaniniwalaan.

Umiiyak ang mga kaibigan at kabataang tinuturuan ni Socrates nang inumim niya nang buong tapang ang isang kopita ng alak na may halo nang lason mula sa halamang hemlock.

Isa sa mga kabataang ito si Plato na siyang nagsulat ng mga aral at buhay ng kanyang guro. Dahil sa mga isinulat ni Plato, mas marami ang nakabasa at naka-intindi ng mga aral ni Socrates.

Nagtayo si Plato ng school at tinawag niya itong Academy. Si Socrates, si Plato, at ang akademya ang ninuno ng mga guro, paaralan at manunulat sa kasalukuyan. Sa murang edad ay tinuturuan na ang mga kabataan na magtanong nang magtanong nang magtanong.

Gusto mo bang matuto? Magpakumbaba at magsimula kang aminin sa sarili na sa totoo lang ay kulang na kulang pa ang iyong alam.

More Rights of the Author Over His/Her Work

Aside from the reproduction rights, there are other rights that an author has over his/her work. Here they are:

Adaptation is when someone gives the work a new form. For example: if the novel “Mingaw” by Frida Mujer is turned into a movie, from the novel that’s made up of letters and words, after the adaptation, it can be enjoyed as moving pictures with lots of talking and “sizzling” movie stars.

If Mingaw is turned into a graphic book or comics, it is still called adaptation because it took another form, the graphic book, which is made of lines and colors from the creative hand of an artist.

To adapt "Mingaw," the movie producer or the artist and publisher must first seek the permission of Frida Mujer. Everything must also be clear and fair when discussing the fee AND the percentage from the revenue of the new form that should be given to the creator of the original work.

It can also be turned into a stage play or a theater piece for the performance of the work for those who love ala-broadway shows.

Translation for Korean teleserye scouts who fall in love with "Mingaw" because of its scenes that are situated in Seoul, South Korea. They can have Mingaw translated into Korean language for the market in their hometown.

And last but definitely not the least, for your father in law to enjoy the sexiest parts of Mingaw, it can be turned into a radio drama. It can also be turned into a TV series. But of course, your father in law must stay up until midnight because it can only be shown on national TV during that time, when most of the kids are already asleep. These are forms of broadcasting.

To make the long story short, for the adaptation, translation, performance and broadcasting of Mingaw: the permission of the author (Frida Mujer) must always be sought first and she must be given decent pay every time.

The reasons are:

1. The translator will receive income because there will be patrons who will watch Mingaw in Korean language.
2. Tickets to the ala-Broadway version of Mingaw will definitely be expensive so the writer (of the original work) must receive a decent amount for every ticket sold.

3. The radio and TV broadcast are also kinds of stage show, but this time, different sets of equipment are used. Of course, the producers will earn a lot because a number of soap and detergent manufacturers will post their advertisements during the telecast or broadcast of Mingaw. (Now you know the reason for the term soap opera. The advertisers and sponsors of this kind of shows are usually soap and detergent manufacturers. They are the ones who pay the TV and radio stations as much as one million bucks for the ads just to attract the viewers to buy their products.)

Remember the saying ‘Customer is king?’ It is very much connected to this article about adaptation. It’s the millions of customers who cause these manufacturers and companies to grow. And they must advertise regularly in popular radio and TV shows to entice the viewers and listeners to patronize their products or services.

The writers, artists, producers and other players of this industry continue creating works to share knowledge and entertain and of course to earn or keep their livelihood. And the viewers and listeners will wait for these works to be aired. And the companies and the manufacturers too.

Is the cycle more obvious by now?

manufacturer or internet provider > Viewer/Listener/Consumer> Ordinary Pinoy
folks.

The ordinary folks will pay for the shampoo. The shampoo company will pay for
the ads. The media will reap the benefits. And then the media pays Frida Mujer.
She will continue to write and create a new work because she has the money to
pay for the food, the rent, the utility bills and of course, for a bottle of
shampoo. The cycle will just go on.

2011 Lampara Books Children's Story Writing Contest

1. The contest aims to find suitable stories for children for publication as illustrated children’s books by Lampara Publishing House, Inc. under its book imprint Lampara Books.

2. Accepted as entries are children’s stories written by Filipino citizens of all ages capable of writing a story, except the current officers and employees of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. and its sister company, Precious Pages Corporation, including their relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity.

3. The story:

a. must be an original work of the author.

b. can be written in either Filipino/Tagalog or English.

c. should be written in a way that it can be divided into fourteen (14) segments or frames. (Each segment shall be illustrated on a spread of the book, whose actual size is 8 x 9 inches. For guidance, please refer to published children’s stories of Lampara Books).

d. must be within the reading comprehension of children from ages five to 12.

e. must have a significant moral lesson.

4. The word length for the entry is from 800 to 1200.

5. The theme is open and free.

6. The manuscript:

a. must be typewritten or computerized, double-spaced on 8 ½ X 11 inches bond paper, with approximately one-inch margin on all sides. The page number must appear consecutively, that is: 1 of 5, 2 of 5 and so on, at the center of the bottom margin of each page. If computerized, the font should be either Arial, Times New Roman or Book Antiqua, and the font size should be 12pt.

b. must bear on the front/title page only the title of the story and the pen name of the author.

7. Any number of entries can be submitted by an author.

8. The entry:

a. should not have won any award in another contest before November 29, 2011. Neither should have it been published in any form prior to the said date.

10. Submissions can be handcarried or sent via messengerial service to the above address. The author or the messenger shall be issued an acknowledgement document upon receipt of the submission by Ms. Dolores Sales.

11. SUBMISSION BY E-MAIL

a. An entry submitted through electronic mail should be in Word Document file and sent as an attachment to a covering letter to any of these e-mail addresses:

Therefore the entry form must be sent to the mailing address above, contained in a white business envelope, with the title of the entry on the lower left corner of the envelope.

b. An acknowledgement letter upon receipt of the submission shall be sent via e-mail to the author-sender by the designated custodian of all entries.

c. The designated custodian of all entries shall take responsibility in downloading all the entries onto a USB file, in printing them out in triplicate, in placing them in a sealed brown envelope and printing the title of the entries on the envelope.

12. All entries must be received on or before November 29, 2011 (Tuesday) at the close of office hours of Lampara Publishing House, Inc.

13. Entries submitted must comply with government policies on printed matters.

14. All sealed envelopes containing the entries shall be kept in a filing cabinet drawer under lock and key by the designated custodian (Ms. Dolores Sales or Mr. Epi Periña) of all entries, and shall only be brought out on the day commencing the start of the judging date.

15. The date starting the day of judging is December 5, 2011 (Monday), at 10:00 AM at the Conference Room of Lampara Publishing House, Inc., with a DTI representative in attendance.

16. Lampara Publishing House, Inc. has the sole right to designate the persons who shall constitute the Board of Judges. The decision of the judges shall be final with the concurrence from DTI.

17. There are three prizes at stake:

First – Php30, 000.00

Second – Php15, 000.00

Third – Php10, 000.00

The winners will likewise be given plaques of merit.

18. The first and second prizes shall be subjected to the 20% tax for prizes exceeding Php10,000.00 and shall be shouldered by the winners.

19. Manager’s checks with the corresponding amount of prizes and certificates of merit shall be handed to the authors of the winning entries on the date and venue indicated in Item 24—only after verification of their identities against the personal information contained in their respective entry forms. Identification cards issued by the government, with corresponding photographs and signatures, shall be preferred.

20. CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

The following criteria shall be used by the judges in evaluating and judging the entries to determine the winners:

a. CONTENT / 60%

Subject or topic—must be creative, novel or contemporary, fully explored and developed

Plot—must be creative, novel or contemporary, fully explored and developed

b. TREATMENT / 20%

Language—must be within the vocabulary range of readers five to 12 years old

Comprehensibility—writing must be within the understanding of readers from five to 12 years old

Fun and enjoyment must be derived from reading the story

c. MORAL VALUES / 20%

Moral lesson—must be distinct; fully explored, developed and transmitted to the reader

Insight—must be distinct; fully explored, developed and transmitted to the reader

21. Tabulation of scores shall take place at the Conference Room of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. on January 14, 2012 (Saturday) in the presence of a DTI representative.

22. An author who submits more than one entry may emerge a double or multiple winner

23. a. The names of the winners and the members of the Board of Judges shall be announced on the Lampara Books Web site: www.lamparabooks.com.ph on January 16, 2012 (Monday). The news release shall likewise be disseminated on facebook.

b. Notification through telephone call and/or registered mail shall also be made/ sent to the authors of the winning entries on the same day.

24. The awarding ceremonies will be held at the Multipurpose Hall of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. at 300 Biak-na-Bato St., Barangay Manresa, SFDM, Quezon City on January 28, 2012.

25. a. If unable to attend the awarding event, a winner may claim his/her prize within 60 (sixty) days from receipt of notice at the Lampara Publishing House, Inc. main office at 83 Sgt. Rivera St., Brgy. Manresa, San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City.

b. Upon claiming the prize the winner must present 2 (two) valid government IDs.

26. Any unclaimed prize after the redemption period will be forfeited in behalf of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. with the prior approval of DTI.

27. All the winning entries shall become the sole property of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. For purposes of exclusive publication by the company, whether print, electronic or through broadcast media, Lampara Publishing House, Inc. shall own the copyright of the stories, in which case, apart from the cash prize awards, it will purchase from the authors their winning stories, the selling price of each of which shall be determined by the prevailing sale of and tax provisions regarding literary works in the publishing industry.

The sale shall be covered by and accomplished with a Deed of Sale.

28. Therefore, with regards to Item 23, Lampara Publishing House, Inc. shall have the absolute right to publish at its own discretion the winning entries or portions thereof, and to designate or appoint editors to edit the work or any portion thereof to suit the demands of publication.

29. a. Manuscripts of non-winning entries must be claimed by the authors within sixty days after the announcement of winners. Unclaimed manuscripts shall be subjected to recycling and/or shredding.

b. Submissions sent through e-mail shall be deleted from the submission file of Lampara Publishing House, Inc. a day after the announcement of winners. The USB file containing the soft copies of entries sent through e-mail shall be subjected to recycling and their hard copies to recycling and/or shredding.

30. All parties submitting entries are deemed to have accepted the rules of the contest, and agree to abide by them.

Naglipana kamakailan sa mga status sa Facebook ang “RIP, Steve Jobs.” Isa sa mga malikhaing FB status na nabasa ko ay ang kay Leo Almonte: the inventor of Apple joined the Creator of apple.

Sino nga ba si Steve Jobs? At bakit maraming tao sa buong mundo ang nakiramay sa pagpanaw niya?

Wala akong iPhone at iPad. Ang mahal kasi. Hindi rin ako naglagay ng status sa FB na related sa pagpanaw ni Steve Jobs. Pero gusto kong pag-usapan natin si Steve Jobs bilang Intellectual Property creator.

Ang biological father niya ay isang exchange student mula sa Syria. Nabuntis niya ang girlfriend na isang Amerikana. Dahil ayaw ng mga magulang ng babae na magsama sila at hindi pa nila kayang magpamilya ay ipinaampon si Steve sa isang mag-asawang Amerikano na pawang manggagawa.

Nakatapos ng high school si Steve. At naka-isang semestre sa kolehiyo. Agad niyang nakita na sayang ang ibinabayad ng mga magulang niya sa tuition dahil parang hindi niya magagamit sa totoong buhay ang mga itinuturo doon. Hindi na niya tinapos ang kolehiyo. Pero masipag siyang mag-isip, magbasa, makinig, at tumingin sa mundo nang pabaliktad. Naging hobby niya ang magbuwag ng status quo.

Ano ang ibig sabihin ng status quo? Ito ay ang lagay ng buhay na nakagawian na. At dahil ito na ang kalakaran sa buhay ay wala nang gustong palitan pa ito. Hassle pa kasi pag pinalitan ang nakagawian. Panibagong adjustment. Panibagong pag-aaral.

At nakaka-inis mag-adjust. At lalong nakakabagot mag-aral.

Mas okay ang status quo. Alam mo na ito so parang robot ka na lang. Di na kailangang mag-isip o magka-dilemma sa pagpili ng desisyon.

Pero binuwag ni Steve ang status quo sa pamamagitan ng pag-iisip nang iba mula sa nakagawian.

Ang motto ng kumpanyang Apple ay “Think different.” Ang Apple ay itinatag ni Steve kasama si Steve Wozniak at Ronald Wayne noong 1976. Isinabuhay niya ang pag-iisip ng salungat sa nakagawian at ito ay nagbigay-buhay sa mga bagong gadget tulad ng personal computer na Macintosh. Napakanipis ng latest na MacBook Air laptop. Kasya pa nga ito sa isang brown envelope.

Binuwag ni Steve ang status quo pero hindi niya binuwag ang batas. Ginawa niyang katuwang ang batas sa pagpapalaganap ng kanyang mga imbensiyon. Sumandal siya sa pader ng mga batas ng IP. At kaliwa’t kanan ang mga IP na binigyan ng patent, trademark, at copyright. Na nakapagbigay ng trabaho sa maraming tao di lang sa Amerika kundi sa iba’t ibang bansa.

Ayon sa New York Times nasa 317 patented products ang hawak ng Apple at kasama si Steve sa mga nag-imbento ng iba rito tulad ng mga PC, computer housing, iPod media player, iPhone electronic device, laptop, keyboard, mouse, monitor, power adapter, at iba pa.

Maliban dito ay si Steve rin ang nagpakilala sa atin kay Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Nemo, at iba pang tauhan dahil sa animation studio niyang Pixar.

Binago ng mga IP ni Steve ang buhay ng maraming tao. Sana ang 'Pinas ay magkaroon din ng maraming IP creators na makakapagbigay ng trabaho at magdudulot ng malaking epekto sa buhay ng ating mga kababayan.

Don’t you love to munch that turon especially if it has just come out of the frying pan? What about the huge slices of langka embracing the banana, would you love to munch that as well? Triple yes!

After enjoying the food, you are expected to pay for the turon because it is the livelihood of your father-in-law, the manufacturer of the best turon in town. Burp.

The turon and the author’s work have lots of things in common. To eat a turon is to consume a work or a creation. The distinct flavor of the turon is the original expression of an idea that is being given copyright. (For the distinct flavor of your father-in-law’s turon, he may have it registered as a trade secret. And I am not joking. There is such thing as a trade secret. Examples are the formula for the barbecue sauce of Aristocrat Restaurant and the formula of Coke.)

The turon is for everyone, as long as one has money to pay for it. The accessibility of the turon can be compared to the access of the public to a work or a creation. The payment for the turon that goes to the creator, your father-in-law, can be considered as the just remuneration that an author receives when someone consumes his/her work.

Your father-in-law produces more than one turon, right? In fact, he produces a lot, about 500 pieces in a single day so that he will be able to sell them to a lot of people. He will earn loads of money even if all of his turon have the same taste.

In the copyright world, it is called reproduction right or the right of the author to reproduce his/her work so that many people can enjoy it. Of course, the more people who get to enjoy the work, the more remuneration an author receives. This is part of the livelihood of an author.

Therefore, every work and every copy of the work has an economic power. It means the work and the copy of the works are sources of income. It simply means that it can give life and comfort to the author, actually, the author and the entity that are responsible for the reproduction of the work.

It follows that the work and copies of the work are part of an author’s livelihood, part of an author’s lifeline.

Is it legal?

Of course!

According to the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (from sec. 177), the author, subject to the provisions of Chapter VIII, has copyright or economic rights that shall consist of the exclusive right to carry out, authorize or prevent the following acts:
177.1. Reproduction of the work or substantial portion of the work;
177.2 Dramatization, translation, adaptation, abridgment, arrangement or other transformation of the work;
177.3. The first public distribution of the original and each copy of the work by sale or other forms of transfer of ownership;
177.4. Rental of the original or a copy of an audiovisual or cinematographic work, a work embodied in a sound recording, a computer program, a compilation of data and other materials or a musical work in graphic form, irrespective of the ownership of the original or the copy which is the subject of the rental; (n)
177.5. Public display of the original or a copy of the work;
177.6. Public performance of the work; and
177.7. Other communication to the public of the work (Sec. 5, P. D. No. 49a)

The word right means two things: one is the economic right and the other one is the moral right. Moral right is the right to be recognized as the author of the work. Economic right is the right to earn from his/her own work.

Ang isang simpleng kuwento ng manunulat ay maaaring magdulot ng malawak na epekto sa buhay ng maraming tao. Isang kuwento lang diyan, marami ang naiimpluwensiyahan.

Ang International Day of Non-Violence ay isang pandaigdigang pagdiriwang na idineklara ng United Nations noong 2007 para ipakalat ang ideals ng “culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.” Ang araw ng selebrasyon ay Oktubre 2 na siya ring birthday ni Mahatma Gandhi.

Ang mapayapang paraan ng pakikibaka ni Gandhi laban sa British Empire ang naging inspirasyon ng maraming aktibista tulad nina Martin Luther King Jr. at Nelson Mandela.

Namumutiktik ang history books tungkol sa husay ni Gandhi sa pangunguna sa mga pakikitunggaling hindi gumagamit ng karahasan. Ang ganitong uri ng pakikipagtunggali ang nagpabagsak ng British Empire sa India. Pero ang totoo, nagsimula ang lahat sa isang Indian classic story.

Bilang isang Hindu, nakapanood si Gandhi ng mga dula ukol sa kwento ni Harishchandra. Ayon sa kuwento ng dula, si Harishchandra ay tumutupad sa kanyang pangako at hindi nagsisinungaling. Naghirap siya at ang kanyang pamilya pero tiniis niya ito at sa huli ay biniyayaan siya ng mga diyos.

Malalim ang naging epekto nito sa isip at buhay ni Gandhi. Kaya kahit na nakapag-aral siya sa London at naging abogado pa nga ay pinili niyang mamuhay nang simple, matuwid, tapat, at matapang.

Kahit na hindi natin narinig o nakita si Gandhi nang face to face ay malaki ang epekto niya sa mga tao sa buong mundo dahil sa kanyang paraan ng pakikibaka: walang karahasan. At siyempre nalaman natin ito dahil sa mga librong isinulat ni Gandhi at ng iba pang tao tungkol sa buhay niya.

Kung susumahin, ang nagsulat ng kuwento tungkol kay Harishchandra ay isang manunulat na nakapaghubog sa murang isip at nakapagpayabong sa katauhan ni Gandhi. Ang mga aklat tungkol kay Gandhi ay siya namang nakakapaghubog ng mga isip ng mga makakabasa nito. At dahil ginawa nang pandaigdigang pagdiriwang ang non-violent ideals ni Gandhi, mas marami at mas malawak na ang epekto nito.

Kaya huwag nating maliitin ang mga kuwento. Lalo na 'yong mga kuwentong akala mo, pangbarbero, pambata, pangkalye, o pang-jologs lang. Puwedeng simple lang sa iyo pero sa iba ay puwedeng makapagpabago ng kanilang mundo.
